Walther P99 magazine drops while firing

I shot my P99 in .40 cal for the first time and had something happen that has NEVER happened before (in 15 years of handgun shooting) and was wondering if it is a bug (workmanship problem), feature (design problem), or end user error (MY stupidity).

After shooting 3 or 4 full mags( 10 rd non leo)....

I put a full magazine into the P99, pressed the slide release, and fired off a round.

Out flies the spend brass, out flies a new round, and out drops the mag with 8 rounds. It is very eerie to do double taps and hear BANG, CLICK.

I can guess that I didn't have the magazine completely in the weapon which caused this anomaly, BUT it seemed to "click in" and the slide release operated.

I've never had that happen with my P99 or any other gun. The mag probably wasn't in all the way, or it's possible you hit the mag release by accident. Make sure you push it in all the way, especially if it's fully loaded and the slide is closed. I'd try some more shooting at the range before I send it back for repair.

I had this happen to my P99 once, and determined that the magazine wasn't fully seated. I have since sold that weapon.

Make sure that the mag is seated in the well. Listen for the "click". The springs on the P99 mags are very strong, and with a full mag, you have to make sure that they do seat properly. This is one of the reasons that I too traded away my P99.

Correct me if I am wrong but memory serves me that the P99 mag release is similar to the H&K USP. I had this problem with 3 different USPs. Somehow I was hitting the mag release while shooting. I shoot left handed and problem got so bad that I had to grind off the right side mag release lever on all of them.
