Walther P99 Help

I got my new Walther P99 today, which is a good thing. However, when I got it home and went to disassemble it to clean it, I couldn't get the takedown lever down. I followed the instructions in the manual, but couldn't get the thing to budge. Am I just a wuss or is there some trick to this?

I don't ever pull back on the slide when I take down my P99.

I drop the mag, hit the decocker, hold it by the grip with my right hand with the barrel pointed to the left, grab over the slide with my left hand and push down on the takedown lever. When you do that the slide pops forward and you can then grab it with your left hand and pull it of the frame. Simple...

Actually, it was difficult the first couple of times I tried it until I "discovered" this way to do it. Good luck.

yeah .. mines pretty tough also.. just a strong spring, thats all.. i never heard of half cocking it first.. i just may try that later tonite... thanks..

Now that I'm home and have more time, I'll tell you the full story of how I do it.

After making sure the gun is empty and the magazine is out, decock the gun. Then with my right hand I grip the P99 at the back of the slide with my fingers over the top of the slide and my thumb at the top of the back of the grip, right under the "beaver tail". Pull back the slide with your fingers on your right hand that's gripping the gun, then with your left fingers pull down the take down latch and then let off the pull back pressure with your right hand. This will allow the slide to go forward enough past the take down latch that now you should be able to pull the slide right off.

Hope this helps

My quite new P99 is also difficult to take down as described in the manual. My preferred method is to hold the grip in my left hand and, from above the slide, push down on the takedown levers with the thumb and forefinger. Then slide of the slide assy.
Something else I noticed that is different from the manul is that on re-assembly, I have to push the takedown levers twice during the process. It appears that a slight amount of pressure on the internal catch that the takedown levers drop down will cause the takedown levers to pop back up. When I'm sliding the slide back on, about 1/3 of the way something on the slide assy will hit that latch and pop the levers back up requiring me to push them down again to complete the re-assembly.
Simple, just different from the way the manul describes.
I suppose I could just yank the slide back on with alot of force and it would work but I like to treat this baby with respect. It's a wonderful piece of craftsmanship if you ask me! :)

After a bit of trial, I've found that what works best for me is to grip the slide from the top with my left hand while holding the grip in my right and then pushing the slide back while simultaneously pushing down the takedown lever with my left thumb and forefinger. I have freakishly small hands. Now today's mission is to give it its first real cleaning, change the backstrap and this weekend it should see its first bit of range time in my hands. I think the test firing target that they include is great. Has anyone framed theirs, or am I the only one who's had that urge? ;)

P99 told you the correct way!

Not actually correct.

P99 gave an easier way to remove the slide on a new or tighter weapon. This method is the "Glock" way of removing the slide and must be done with the Glock pistol to allow the slide lock to be pulled down however, the P99 manual does not advise drawing the slide to the rear is necessary on the Walther P99.

I have two P99's and both slides come off the pistol in the manner described in the Walther manual but I will agree, drawning the slide to the rear slightly does make the process easier on my newer 9x19 gun but...not necessary. ;)
