Walther P99 .40

Someone turned my attention to the Walther P99. Did a little research, and can see that a LOT of thought went into this gun. Okay, I'm interested.

I've heard that some of the guns are made in the US by S&W. I want a 100% German gun. Apparently only 3000 of the US made hybrids were built, though.

If I have my dealer order me a P99 .40, new from his distributor, what are the odds that it'll be all-German made?

I have the Walther P99 in .40S&W and it's an excellent handgun.
The 2-stage trigger takes some geting used to. The interchangable back-straps allow you to fit the gun to your hand. I very much like the decocker sytem they use. The 100% Walther version is german-made. The SW-99 is the half-breed with Smith & Wesson making the slide and Wather making the frame.

I'm afraid it's true--there were a reported 3,000 or so .40 auto P99 slides that were made by S&W. These guns are easily distinguishable from the all-German guns by the missing German proofmarks (eagle over "N").

I know that there were S&W guns made. But I can't inspect the pistol before my dealer orders it, so I'm asking that if I have him order a P99 .40, will it be all German made, or is it a toss up? I don't want to end up with a S&W junker and be stuck with it.

If your dealer won't give you a 3 day inspection, then buy one off of Guns America (www.gunsamerica.com) and deliver it through your dealer. You can determine through pictures ahead of time if it is German proofed or not, and you get a 3 day inspection for dealer-dealer transfers.

Regards,
James

In my particular case, I had my dealer phone his distributer and ask "point blank" if it had the German proofmarks or not.

I, personally, wouldn't place an order without knowing whether it was all German-made. I don't like those kind of surprises/disappointments.

BTW: GREAT site guys!!!!

I've been searching around since last night for info about my Walther. Went to a bunch of different forums with minimal info about this.

A ten minute search through this board answered all my questions! Thanks for the info folks :-D

I was told the same - Walter's are all German and S&W are hybrids (S&W slides), all with Jerry Miculek standing behind the sales rep with a S&W 99 .40 in his hand so I guess I gave it more credibility.
