Walther P22

So after bouncing back and forth between a Sig Mosquito and a Walther P22 I settled on a P22. Of course here in CA I have to wait 10 days before I pick it up.

Ignore the flamers, and enjoy a fun little pistol! Mine has been reasonably accurate, and reliable with the right ammo. CCI MinMag, and Remington Golden Bullet both function perfectly, and are reasonably accurate. Not so much with Federal Champion, and Winchester bulk 333 or 555.
I say reasonably accurate because it is in no way a precision target pistol, and was never intended to be. It's a scaled down plinker version of a service, or CCW pistol.
There is a pdf download that will give you lots of tips, and information on the care, and feeding of your new Walther.

Congrats, now find some MiniMaga, or RGBs, and go have some fun.:D

I think it is a good choice. I went through all of the choices and I got mine down to the Walther P22 and a Ruger 22/45 Mark III Target. I chose the Ruger only because the Walther is known to be more picky with ammo than the Ruger (since any ammo is hard to find where I live). My son-in-law has had a Mark II for 20+ years and it has served him well.

Ruger would have been mine also but they aren't on our DOJ approved list any more!!

Its a shame you had to choose between those two.

I feel bad for CA residents.

One of many reasons that even at my age I keep looking at AZ its only 2 1/2 hours away so easy to vist kids and grandkids. At least that's what I tell the wife.:D

I can't imagine living under the crazy rules of California after living in Virginia for all of my nearly 68 years. I'm not aware of any guns that I can't buy that are allowed by the Federal Government and I can leave the store with them within minutes. I don't give a second thought to open carry because Virginia never passed a law against it. A loaded gun is legal as long as it is in open view. I conceal carry now but I originally got my concealed carry permit in case I had a gun in my car and a newspaper, jacket or something might fall over it and put me in violation of the law.

Doesn't matter here's the Ruger list of approved Ruger's how many semi auto 22LR Rugers do you see? Ruger pulled their semi autos because of the SR-22 when they did a mod to add a roll pin then CA wanted it revert with micro stamping .

I loved my P-22 from the moment I held it. It feels great in hand, naturally points and makes for a great training tool. Unfortunately, mine was not very durable and had gouging in the frame and slide rails after only a few thousand rounds. It was replaced by S&W and according to the tech I spoke with, I should've expected to see similar issues around the aforementioned round count.

I felt that was a bit of an exaggeration as there are thousands of reliable P-22's out there with many more rounds through them. Despite that, I sold it and bought a MK 22/45. I still miss it but have given up on the P-22's for now.

You'll really enjoy the P-22; its accurate, fun to shoot and has a decent trigger out of the box. It also has some nice features, like replaceable back-straps and sights, if I recall correctly. When my P-22 was running, it ate any type of ammo I put in it and would run dirty. Let us know how it works out for you. Also, check out the link below for a good P-22 resource..

I had a P22. It was good for what it was, which was a range plinker. With the right ammo, it was reliable enough. Main thing I didn't like about it was the accuracy, which was terrible. Also, I wasn't sure how it would hold up in the long haul.

Got rid of it mainly because I also picked up a Ruger SR22 a year later and thought that was a better gun.

My wife used to shoot with me years ago, and now she would like to try it again I figured this would be a good trainer after its broken in, she gas a Browning BDA in .380 that has been a safe queen, want her to shoot it again along with the Sig SP2022 I have.

The P22 gets a bad rap on some forums amd I honestly don't know why. Mine has been reliable with either the long or short barrels. It's not a precision target pistol, but it's a handy little plinker. Maybe I just got lucky.

I don't know if they still do it, but the P22s used to have a letter code that tell you how far into production you specific handgun was. I believe it started with AA. Somewhere about AG is where the serious problems with the P22 started to fade away. Before them, the guns had many serious problems, including a malfunctioning safety, parts breakage, FTFs, FTEs etc.

Early P22s earned a truly horrible reputation. What is unfortunate for Walther is that layer, and current generation P22s are only regarded as OKAY. With the current crop of semi-auto 22s, okay just doesn't cut it.

@Gazpacho:

Is this the production mark you referred to? If I understand correctly, mine is an earlier model. Do you know how production dates match up to the these marks?

Yup, that's the mark. I don't know how the code relates to specific dates. I seem to remember that Walther made design changes without regard to model year.
