Walther P22 -- Positive Experiences?

Thinking about a P22 for teaching the newbies; my only .22 right now is a near-3-lb target beast with anatomic grips (really only good for offhand shooting).

Looks like you can get the base model, blue, 3.4" P22 for somewhere in the low $200s. That's not too shabby, and it just plain looks cool--that'd go a long way in getting newbies comfortable. (I'm not going to make them choose between my target beast or my .44 or .45.)

Lots of folks were complaining about FTFs, FTEs, crappy magazines, and general poor quality. Is this still the case? Do these little guys need to break in? What's the latest?

And what does the base model cost where you live?
 
Since I already have a Walther PP in .22 caliber I went for the longer barrel in the P22. Sort of like a cheap Walterh PP .22 Sport. I have had good luck with mine using good quality high velocity ammo. There were some failures to feed in the first few magazines full, but the gun smoothed out. It is no PP, but it is one third the price and still a fun little plinker.
 
I just read the manual at the Walther site. Judging by the decocking instructions, it looks like the P22 can be cocked and locked. Is that the case?
 
Since it is equipped with a manual safety, it may be carried so. There is no decock feature so be sure you unload the pistol before attempting to lower the hammer. I love mine. One of my mags is crap. The feed lips are too close together and its very difficult to load. It does feed fine though. I think I will still send the mag back though.
 
Mine has worked fine. I had one jam the other day, the first round in a full mag nosedived, out of my tightest mag. That's the only malf I've had so far. It's accurate enough to do the job out to 25 yards, and I can keep it on paper at fifty, but I hold about 10 inches high. I won't trade it, which is what I do with guns I'm not happy with.
 
Mine has worked well. It didn't like the low powered loads at first, but after shooting some hi powered stuff it shoots everything. It really shoots well with target grade stuff.
 
Whelp, I just had to get one today. I'll put some rounds through it and see how it goes...

The DA trigger is horrendous, but I don't believe in DA triggers on semi-autos anyway.

Where did you find the manual for the P22. I have been looking at the Walther site and it keeps saying manuals coming soon.
Maybe it is a different site?
 
Thanks I found it. I have one of these guns coming and just couldn't wait to at least read something about it. If anyone is interested when I try it out I will post what I think about it.

Got the 5" barrel version ~$325 out the door (if I was a banger or a terrorist I could've gotten it for $5 at a gun show, EVERYONE knows that!:barf: ).

Does not reliably cycle Aguila subsonic (HP, solid point). FOR FUN ONLY! Smells good though...although I wonder what I'm really inhaling & what long-term effects will be...

Does not cycle Aguila Colibri, and will not load from magazine. FOR FUN ONLY!

Cycled 100% of Winchester & Remington bulk, CCI MiniMags and Stingers, Aguila Hyper Velocity.

Accuracy is good with all ammo so far. I picked up some different stuff and hope to try it this weekend (more Aguila & CCI types).

Everyone who has shot it likes it, "even though it's just a wimpy .22." PERFECT for new shooter training, also works as a tradeoff for the guy who has a big-bore and is taking his girlfriend shooting for the first time, I let her use the Walther (ammo cost maybe 50 cents) while I get to use his BFG (ammo cost heh heh heh). Works for me! :cool:
