came across this mint walther p1. don't know too much about them, so i was wondering if anyone around here could help me out. it's blued, with two mags and holster. cleaning kit. about $350. serial#0383xx. how does this compare to the p-38? civilian version? any sites that lead to info for this particular pistol? thanks all.

They're identical to the war-time P-38s except for the alloy frame.

the P-1si are nice enough guns, but absolutely no collectors value.

I've got a very nice war-time P-38. About 95%. Mediorce accuracy, which seems to be a characteristic of the P-38 in general.

Don't expect too much of these guns. They were, in a way, a breakthru gun (one of the first, if not the first DA/SA guns) and far easier to build than the P-08s they replaced. But they are not tack drivers.

If you're looking for a good, reliable , but reasonably priced 9mm, get a Ruger P-95, or a CZ-75B.

The P-38/P-1 is a solid military/police service side-arm, and little more.

thanks for the honest post

but i simply bought it for cheap plinking. any other thoughts on this pistol? any help with disassembly? any pointers? thanks again.

I have one of these, the German army is going to an HK pistol and surplusing off their P1s. This was their official pistol from 1957 .

The ones now available seem to be unissued, were made in the 1970s and 1980s and have all the improvements made to the P1/P38 such as thicker slides and a steel reinforcement in the alloy frame to protect against the locking block. Also improved sights.

IMHO, the P1/P38 is a viable pistol today and only lacks a hi-cap magazine. The DA pull sucks, but the SA is ok. The gun is not a t
arget pistol but, holds its own as a military/police pistol.

Do a google search, there are downloadable manuals for the P38 on the web.
