A neighbor of mine has an old p-38 stowed away and has done nothing with it in 30 + yrs. With a little persuasion I think I could get her to sell it.Does anyone know what one is worth? And when I go to see it what should I look for? Thanks Dave

You can find P-1s (the postwar version of the P-38) in Shotgun News for $275 and up. For actual P-38 values, you should check out Fjestad's Blue Book of Gun Values.

As for what to look for, I don't know.

not really much to look for as it is a war production piece. it would be nice if it comes with the original holster (flap type) and extra clip.

the year of manufacture is stamped on the side beneath the eagle and 3 letter manufacturer's code. all major parts are numbered and they should all match...if they don't, it could still be a shooter, but the price should them fall into the $200's. i would be thinking anything below $500 would be reasonable for a nice one.

A good, clean, matching WWII P-38 will run between $400-500. A mismatched one puts it in the shooter category - $200-300 range. With the market now flooded with the P-1's coming in from Europe these figures are probably a little out of spec.

More info please.

What is it?? If it is a wartime P38, then it will be worth more than a post war. If it has the Waffenampt stamp, and matching parts, then it is worth even more.

Frankly, the link below is more the place to ask this question.

These guys know P38s backwards and forwards!! ;)

Last summer I bought one out of the newspaper. It was made in 1945. Very rough machine marks etc., not wear but very rough finish from end of war production. It is all matching, I don't believe it has a holster. All the nazi markings are intact. (I bought it, put it in the safe and never looked at it again and it is covered with oil and in the cardboard box he handed it to me in). I paid around $300; it was part of a three gun deal and that is roughly what I gave for it.
