Walther P-1's

Has anyone bought one of these?I saw them at CIA and was wondering if they would become a good collectors item.

The P1 is a post-war P38 with an alloy frame and as such not particularly rare. The civilian models were designated P-38 even after the war. If it's a P1, it was a Bundeswehr issue gun, since that was its official designation. The German military had a huge number of P1s, they've just recently started to phase them out for the new issue P8.

P1s are good pistols, although they share the less-than-stellar DA trigger of the P38. They're also slightly tail-heavy, and many American shooters dislike the "safe down, fire up" type safety. I'd buy one as a shooter and for nostalgia reasons any day, but don't expect them to rise in value sharply any time soon.

I had one about 10 years ago. Overall, I liked it alot. It did have a stiff DA, but I didnt mind that since I usually pull the hammer back for target shooting anyway. The only real problem it had, but didnt figure out before I sold it, was that the first time I pulled the trigger SA on the first bullet in the mag, it wouldnt always fire. Other than that, it was a cool piece.

I just picked up one of the 1960's manufactured ones at a local gun show for $200, seemed like a good price. After detail stripping it and cleaning it all up, the only flaw is the rear sight is broken in two, so I'll have to spend another $15 at Gun Parts to make it whole. The bore is great, and amazingly, the trigger is really fine! Even the DA pull is much better than my WW2 P-38, it's a keeper! :)

They are good guns but the aluminium frame starts giving problems after several thousands of rounds.
Later models of the P-1 , the P4 and the P5 have a bolt through the frame to remedy this flaw.
The West German Army or Police never stressed handgun shooting until the terrorist problems of the late '70s required it. That was when frames started to crack.

PzGren,

that abbreviation can only stand for one thing. Was your beret colored green, by any chance, and did you drive around in a big battle taxi called a Marder?

I have a P1 dated 1980. It has the reinforced frame. All in all it is a very good shooter, which is what I bought it for. :)

In 1978 and 1978 I was wearing that green beret(just found it last week, when I cleaned up the garage) and had that big stroller, called Marder. PzGren stands for what you thought. I was in the 1./ 173Btl.
In the reserves I shot dozens of P1s and have good memories of them.
