Some day I'll learn...............

Can anyone point me to a link where I might find out date of manufacture, and get a feel for collector interest for German Walther PPKs?

Thanks in advance,

BT, the short answer is "Shoot it".

The long answer. You've been wanting a shooter for three years (according to your testimony). You have lost faith in American and have sought a German all of this time! I disagree with you about what to do with them to get them to shoot but that's a different paragraph (same Thread). How much do you thing a collector would be willing to pay for a German made Walther (with the Interarms logo?) ? I would say....Ummm...about $500.00. But there aren't many .380 hunters in this bigger is better climate. For better or worse, the market for .380s is down. Furthermore, collectors want the one without the Interarms logo (when they want a PPK/S). Never-the-les, just say you could make $100.00. Is it worth three years of looking for $100.00?

So. You must have thought it was worth $500.00 to you if you bought it to shoot. And IMO, you aren't apt to make anything (much?) selling it.....so shoot it.

Now....If it's a SS, get rid of it. Never trust your life to a SS Walther .380. If it's blued and you want to carry a .380 caliber, (which is not currently in vogue) then take it to a competent smith and have the ramp polished at least. Plus whatever, else he thinks it needs but that will usually do it. Put 150 rnds through it without a single FTF before you trust it.

If your sure that it hasn't EVER been fired you should be giving me advice..........You know more about 'em than I do.

The 9mmK is worth a bit more than the 7.65mm German PPK. There were not as many made or imported to the US.

Also, import marks were not required on handguns until 1968. You're not likely to find any on most imported that year or earlier.

Thanks for posting my site address Pig-Pen.

BloodyThumb,

If there's no date code, which I believe there should be on a PPK/S, I can give you an approximate year of manufacture if you let me know what the serial number is. You can leave the last two or three digits off if that concerns you.

The date code should be either two numbers like 69, for 1969 or two letters, like GH, for 1978.

Let me know.

The only thing I see is on the barrel, visible through the ejection port. That is 72, and antler proof mark, and the German Eagle.

On the frame is the same German Eagle proof mark over an "N".

The serial number is 1661XX.

Many thanks in advance "P"

Found some more information on another site. Based on the marking on the barrel, if the site is correct, it was made by Walther at Ulm in 1972. This is based on the proof on the chamber visible through the ejection port.

But then on the other hand, the manual in the box has a 1981 copyright date...... ?????

The magazines are not Walther marked. I can find no markings at all. I would call it 98%.

I am leaning heavily toward shooting it..........

BT,

According to what info you've given me, your pistol was indeed made in 1972. The antler means it was "proofed" in the Ulm proof house.

Now the serial number tells the true tale (and the date helps also) Your pistol was made in France by Manurhin and probably assembled in Germany, or at least shipped there for proofing.

The manual is probably a replacement. And the magazines, well, I'd would think they would have Walther stamped on them somewhere if they came from the factory.

I would definately shoot it.

I had a stainless PPKs and it was a beauitful gun, but not very reliable. I sold it and replaced it with a blue West German PPKs that I have never shot, it's still in the box with two spare mags and the owners manual and this gun is one of my prized possessions.
