Walter Mitty

For the bibliophobes, Walter Mitty is a character in a short story who fantasizes about being a fighter pilot, a submarine captain, and a few other hero roles.

Snoopy and the Red Baron in the Peanuts comic strip is an allusion to Walter Mitty.

So . . . I have the Walter Mitty gear, the guns, the fighting knives, the cammo clothes, wilderness survival gear, CCW, an assault rifle and a shotgun in the truck, handgun and backup on me, extra handgun in the glove box.

OK . . . Anybody in here actually involved in a shooting/firefight? Military combat experiences don't count.

Just checking . . .

BIG DIFFERENCE.

Does having a fire extinguisher in my home make me a Walter Mitty firefighter wannabe?

Does having a car make me a Walter Mitty Indy 500 wannabe?

Someone who FANTASIZES about being in a gunfight, as in actually wanting to participate in one, needs help.

There's a difference between being a Walter Mitty and being prepared.

I haven't shot anyone, but I was close one evening -- gun drawn and pointed.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

Yes.

And the point of your post is what? Put my guns in a glass case " Break glass in time of war." How many things do you have in your house that you don't use daily/ weekly/ yearly? I guess you should get rid of all that stuff too? Right... clear it all out.

I guess the only people that should have guns are the ones that know they are going to be attacked. Please send me the list of future criminal attacks so I can send my guns to those people.

Civilian shootout - not yet.

Military firefight - counts in my book. If you don't think it counts I'll send you the underwear I had on.

Never shot anyone (and I don't clank when I walk down the street).

Sometimes, when I look at the mags and speed loaders I keep loaded, I wonder what I'm getting ready for. Idealy it would be radioactive zombies, but as that's not going to happen, I keep wondering.

Protecting myself and those in my home is something I take very seriously, but I can see how much I enjoy indulging in this practice.

I think it's this indulgence that JackFlash is refering to. I applaud him for seeing the humor in our hobby and paralleling it to Walter Mitty's daydreams. It takes a lot of guts to publicly say that sometimes you take yourself too seriously. And who here among us is not guilty of that.

What makes you think that "Military combat experiences don't count."? Is it because you never served? Is it because you think that being sent into harms way, without being given the option of not going, somehow makes the loss of life invalid, or not count as real death? [edited - Coinneach] JackFlash, you need to go visit The Wall in Washington, D.C.! Touch it, read it and then thank the men and women that Wall represents, and all the others before and since, for giving their lives so that you [can say that - Coinneach] "Military combat experiences don't count."

The answer to your question is yes.

Consider yourself checked.
