walmarts pricing

I just checked prices at walmart and for some reason there r700 is cheaper than there r770. Any Idea why? I am vary green behind the ears when it comes to rifles, well guns in general. Anyway my buddy has a nice 700 and thought I would like to get one and after checking around on prices decided that $377 for a new 700 adl in 223 and a 3006 was a seal. No I don't need both but what I came to decide is that at that price I could do 2 and still get my daughter a pink cricket all for under a grand. The 700s come with a cheap throw away scope that will at least get me out shooting for now. But why is there 700 cheaper than there 770? Thanks stew

Being the largest retailer of guns in the country, Walmart negotiates wholesale prices from vendors. I suspect they got a better deal on that model.

Could be old stock vs new stock, could be a normally stocked item as opposed to one special ordered. My local Wal-Mart will special order some firearms with no prepayment and thus sometimes ends up with them for sale. Since they buy them one at a time from local wholesalers, they tend to sell for more than similar firearms that are shipped from Wal-Mart's warehouse. But then, pricing at Wally-world seems to have no particular rhyme or reason. While one product is substantially lower in price than somewhere else, the next product is higher priced.

That said, the 770 is a cheaper model than the 700. $377 is not that great a deal on a 770 and about what they sell for at my LGS(actually they are $10 cheaper there).

No, the 700 is $377 and the 770 was $4 something, both have the cheap scope. And the 223 I ordered is still only $377 should be here in 7 to 10 days. The cheapest 700 at gander, used was 350. Them are about the only 2 places to get guns with in a hour drive. There are others but I cant afford to pull in there driveways, let alone buy anything. Really shouldn't be buying what I am but finally got the ok from the boss (wife) to spend a grand so I want as much out of it as I can. And we been together for 9 years, and only let me buy a youth 410 for my daughter so if she says jump im jumping for now anyway. I just hope they are as good as my buddies 700 tho his is a special engraved one so probly wont be. Still a good base rifle to start with I hope. Thanks, Stew

I know the 3006 is, I saw it myself. And I was told the 223 is the same gun just 223 instead of 3006. They have a 243 sitting there to. I asked her like 3 times before even going in. Thought that was to cheap to be true but there they were. I just hope the 223 is not on back order.

The .223 should be a short action. I would be all over it too but California Walmarts don't sell guns.

Volume. They sell more 700's and get a better price. Markup is about 3%

There are times when I have thought the program that sets Walmart's prices has messed up. I haven't looked at rifles in years, but I have seen ammunition prices that seemed way off. For instance, I remember a few years ago seeing 50 round boxes of Federal 45 ACP for $25 and the 100 round counterparts for only $30.

jasmith85,

Now that you mention Wal Mart prices on ammo, about 8 years ago, Wal Mart sold bulk Remington or Federal 22 LR (550 per box) for $8.95. There wasn't a shortage then or even the hint of one but because I live by the rule that when I see a good deal on something I use a lot of, I buy as much as I can afford. I guess that makes me a hoarder of sorts but at least I'm not chasing the stocking cart at Wal Mart or other stores.

Around here, WM gets their guns from Ellett Brothers wholesalers. They will order something in if they do not carry it, but their pricing on some things I was looking at weren't all THAT great, but decent enough (of course anyone can beat Gander Mtn pricing)

I was shocked to find 22 ammunition at Wal-Mart last week until I found out the price. They now get $8.95 per box of 50 with 2 box limit.
No wonder they now have it on the shelf. No one can afford it!

A friend of mine is a manager at my local Walmart and I actually tried to talk him into raising the prices of 22lr. I figure if Walmart raised their prices to the level scalpers are charging when they resell maybe it would discourage the scalpers since it would be a higher up front investment. I also would much rather pay the store extra than give money to the pieces of trash that are keeping this lack of stock going. It also wouldn't hurt the store since we know people are willing to pay that much for it. He, unfortunately, killed that idea when he told me the individual stores cannot manually raise the price on something above a certain percent of what they pay for it.
