Just received this WSJ summary of John Ashcroft's position on several issues of importance to us. His comments on gun control are particularly encouraging.
"Sen. John Ashcroft, nominated to be the next attorney general, has been critical of the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation's performance over the past eight years.
* On the Microsoft Antitrust Case: Microsoft 'has a monopoly share of the market whether you call it a monopoly or not.'
* Gun Control: New restrictions on gun ownership wouldn't be 'prudent or effective in reducing crime.'
* Drug Prosecutions: 'This administration is losing the war on drugs.'
* Privacy: 'Would-be regulators must recognize that the Internet industry has already responded to consumers' privacy concerns.'
* FBI Conduct: 'Innocent citizens expect the bureaucracy not to abuse them - as the...FBI has by handing over hundreds of sensitive files' to the White House.
* Civil Rights: The Justice Department should 'treat Americans fairly based on merit and character, not racial preferences and quotas.'
