I am a peaceful man, my wife says I have a temper, but I only get mad when someone tells me they are a democrat because their parents and grand parents were democrats, but that is another story.
I do not believe in violence. Yet I dont think anyone should have the right to beat on me or rape my wife, kill my children or burglarize my home. I have dealt with criminals for the past 10 years and I will tell you a few things that I have learned.
Number one - criminals are cowards, period. They are not tough, they are yellow and have a yellow strip right down their backs to the bottem of their feet. They talk big and use intimidation, but when it comes to brass tacs they dont have any b@!!$. This may come as a shock to most of you, because our media portrays criminals as street wise, cut throats who are so well trained that they can take your concealed carry firearm and use it against you. Well, I am here to set the record straight, when a criminal sees a gun, his blood runs cold, he will be the first to cry like a baby not to die. Remember this, criminals are like water they will find the path of least resistance.
I am a double below the knee amputee and I walk kinda funny. My two children say I waddle like a weeble. Anyway I look pretty damned funny walking and anyone who sees me will know without a doubt that I can not run. This makes me look like an easy target. Well, I have had three encounters with criminals who tried to mug me and/or kill me and/or steal my car. Nothing like a nice Smith & Wesson (dont get me started there, these were bought years ago) to put the fear of Jesus into the heart of a criminal. One young man brandished a knife to try and scare me when I was in New Orleans, Louisisana (I was in a wheel chair at the time), he told me he wanted five dollars and I told him I wanted his knife. I showed my S&W 686 and he gladly let me have his knife. Another gentleman blocked my jeep in with his car and told me to give him my money. I politely instructed him on the proper parking proceedures and with the help of my S&W 639 the lessons went quiet smoothly. The young criminal passed with flying colors.
Not a shot was fired by either side, and a valuable lesson was learned by the criminal. Not every easy mark, makes an easy target.
Number two - criminals respect authority when they have no choice. Criminals have been taught by our legal system to say they are sorry, they repent, they have changed and this will make the courts go easy on them. Criminals only respect that authority which is unbending and which is swift and sure.
When the courts play both ends of the punishment field, then the criminals do not have any guidance as to what is right and what is wrong. When you let criminals at any age get away with a criminal act because of some misplaced compassion or mercy, you are neither doing society or the criminal any good at all. The criminal will respect a strong iron fist over a weak limp wrist.
It is like the story of the old plow mule. One day a farmer asked his neighbor why he carried a 2x4 across his shoulder with a piece of pull chain on it. The farmer said that he had a stubborn mule that would not plow for nothing. The farmer decided that he would crack the mule between the eyes with a 2x4 to get it's attention, but the only piece of wood he had with him was his chain post. So he used that, well the chain made a heck of a racket when he hit the old mule and the mule commenced to plowing like there weren't no tomorrow. Well the next day the farmer went to plowing and the mule stopped so he wacked him with the same wood and chain, the mule started plowing. The farmer said this went on for a few days, and hell now when the mule slows down all I have to do is rattle the chains.
It is the same with criminals, if the courts will come down hard on them as juveniles and young adults. By putting consequences and punishments to their criminal behavior early on, the courts will save time and money later in the criminals life. As it stands now, criminals are hardly punished and when they are it is ususally probation, this is a win to the criminal and in fact they (criminals) have no desire to complete probation because again there is no great punishment if they dont succed in completing it.
Finally, Criminals are not stupid people they make complex calculations as to the risk of their actions compared to the punishment. It may not be a logical or sophisticated calculation that can be put down on paper, but non the less they make a choice between their following societies rules and breaking the law.
The old addage crime does not pay, is false. Crime does pay and it pays well, even in prison.
Speaking of prisons, they are a joke. More like a country club with a tall fence. Liberals claim that being in prison is degrading, and I must agree, it would be degrading for a law abiding citizen, but for the criminal it is not.
Prison time is simply a cost of doing business to the criminal, like paying property tax and payroll tax to the businessman.
We need to remember that justice does not mean compassion and punishment does not mean mercy. That in order to make a meaningful difference with the criminal you have to earn his respect. And you earn it, by showing him who is boss. In other words, you let the criminal know you are the "Man" and that he will abide by the law, because to break the law means swift, certain and harsh punishment.
Until we get back into the business of punishing criminals for breaking the law, we will have a hard row to hoe when it comes to crime prevention. We must make the punishment out weigh the benefits of being a criminal. We must make the cost of punishment to high, so that it puts the criminals out of business.
God bless you all,
