Wal-Mart may be inadvertently promoting the "gun culture"

I responded to a post a while back where a woman's letter to Wal-Mart complained about the new store layout where they put the gun display at the front of the sporting goods section instead of at the back wall. She felt it was too close to the toy section. It's also right out there in plain view of everyone coming down that main aisle. For those of you who haven't seen it, the Wally World gun displays are now rotating jobs that allow you to get an up-close look without having to lean over the counter. Anyway, this woman felt Wal-Mart was promoting the gun culture.

Good news, I think she may be right! I went to the newly-remodeled Santee, CA store last night and the displays drew a couple of kids over while I was standing there. They were 12 or 13 and were a little intimidated but they had "the look" in their eyes. I asked one kid how much his allowance was and he told me it was $10/week. I then rotated the display to the little Savage .22 autoloader for $99. I told him if he started saving now, he could have enough money for it before the end of summer. Hopefully something sparked in the kid's head.

I'm sure this was nothing overt on Wal-Mart's part, but I had rarely seen anyone give the gun display a second look when it was stuck back against the wall. Now it seems to attract people from the main aisle (as it did me) who are just passing by.

Now if they'd just grow some corporate cajones and sell handguns!

"The fact is that the average man's love of liberty is nine-tenths imaginary, exactly like his love of sense, justice and truth. He is not actually happy when free; he is uncomfortable, a bit alarmed, and intolerably lonely. Liberty is not a thing for the great masses of men. It is the exclusive possession of a small and disreputable minority, like knowledge, courage and honor. It takes a special sort of man to understand and enjoy liberty - and he is usually an outlaw in democratic societies." -- H.L. Mencken, February 12, 1923, Baltimore Evening Sun

I wouldnt get too positive on em yet....bout two weeks ago I picked up a 1022 that i had on layaway.......it was quite a hassle, the lady who was the manager had to come back and retreive the boxed rifle from the "gun room", I had to initial all the little boxes were you write yes or no depending on which edition of the yellow form they have....she then berated the sales associate for selling me the rifle before a background check had been conducted----she was obviously ignorant of the situation, I had already passed the background check and the sales associate needed the riflefor the serial number to finish filling out the forms.....once all that confusion was straightened out, she grasps the box and started walking to the front of the store now im following at my "Ill be damned if you'll hurry pace", we finally get to the parking lot in the front of the store and she hands me the box, lol....i told her that it was hell to be as old as I am and to be treated like a child...she gave me her best soccer mom air head response, a grin and a I dont care yes.....I doubt if Ill buy from them again.....fubsy.

This is not intended to be a "put down"....but why did you buy from them in the first place?

I guess what I'm trying to ask is why not buy from your local gun store?

Definantly an exception to the rule. And you should have sought out the store manager. The policy is at the time of purchase, after the NICS has been done, they should hand you the box, walk with you to the door, smile and say "Have a nice day, and thank you for shopping Wal-Mart!" Anything else and real management should be involved. Wally World has an 800 number, go back to the store and find it. Get "HER" name and call them. You will get a written apology, and she will get a coorporate reprimand. The corporate policy strictly forbids this kind of activity. SAM WALTON loved and supported the 2nd! He was an avid hunter and sportsman. At my local Wally World, the sporting goods section is often the meeting place for the local "GUN CULTURE" as we can sit and talk to Fred for hours, just shooting the poop and having a good time. Tha manager will often come join in as well. There was a sales associate/manager trainee at the same store one day as I was trying to get a box of shotgun shells. There policy is not to sell ammo after 9:00PM, which is ok with me. I went in about 8:30 and wanted to get a box of shells. The little snippett said that the sporting goods guy had gone home sick, and she wouldn't open the case to sell it to me. I asked to see the store manager, and she told me that she was the manager on the PM shift. I went to the customer service desk, got the 800 number and called it right there in the store. 15 minutes later about 20 minutes after 9:00, THE store manager shows up, sells me the ammo and tells me to have a nice day and sorry for the "FORMER" manager's indescretion. Wal Mart's policy is WHATEVER it takes to satisfy the customer. And if one of the stores in Kalifornia is not meeting this policy, call them on it! We only loose if we don't fight!

I support my local gun stores, in fact I support 3 of them, but I also support Wal-Mart. If we stop buying firearms and accessories at mainstream stores, then they will stop carrying them. Which brings us back to the "pornography of guns" that was discussed a while back.

I fully agree with DOCSpanky. The time of Mr. Live and Let Live is over - especially with these "holier-than-thou" types.

Give 'em a call, hopefully the B*tch will be fired and perhaps the word will get around there to lay off the guns.

Whether they're anti-gun, tree-huggers, animal rights, ad nauseum, they all deserved to be confronted. They get away with this crap because everybody is so civil and they take advantage of it.

Bite back.

Guess it takes all kinds. I went to Wally World and asked for some 7.62 ammo
the guy gave me a funny look and said nothing. After our staring contest I said it’s for an AK type rifle. Immediately he says we don’t carry that. (Right it sits beside the .223 ammo)
A few days later same store different clerk. “Do you have any 7.62 ammo?”
“Yes how many do you need.” Third time I was talking to another clerk about rifles and he ask “what do you shoot?” I told him “some people frown on them it’s an AK-47” he smiled and said “my brother got one wish I did”.

We need to support Wal-mart. They have done more to support comertial growth in stagnant areas that any other company.

G50AE, yes and no. They offer goods in some areas not available from other sources in that local. However they also drive out a lot of small "mom and pop" businesses. It is a double edged sword.
Their gun stance is questionable at best. No handgun sales and in November they began pulling all the "black" Mossbergs form their shelves and returning them to their suppliers. They will still carry the more PC wood scatterguns but not the evil black ones. Sam Walton would turn over in his grave.
Jack99, I like your orginal post in the thread. A new enthusiast drolling in the gun case. :)
