I responded to a post a while back where a woman's letter to Wal-Mart complained about the new store layout where they put the gun display at the front of the sporting goods section instead of at the back wall. She felt it was too close to the toy section. It's also right out there in plain view of everyone coming down that main aisle. For those of you who haven't seen it, the Wally World gun displays are now rotating jobs that allow you to get an up-close look without having to lean over the counter. Anyway, this woman felt Wal-Mart was promoting the gun culture.
Good news, I think she may be right! I went to the newly-remodeled Santee, CA store last night and the displays drew a couple of kids over while I was standing there. They were 12 or 13 and were a little intimidated but they had "the look" in their eyes. I asked one kid how much his allowance was and he told me it was $10/week. I then rotated the display to the little Savage .22 autoloader for $99. I told him if he started saving now, he could have enough money for it before the end of summer. Hopefully something sparked in the kid's head.
I'm sure this was nothing overt on Wal-Mart's part, but I had rarely seen anyone give the gun display a second look when it was stuck back against the wall. Now it seems to attract people from the main aisle (as it did me) who are just passing by.
Now if they'd just grow some corporate cajones and sell handguns!

"The fact is that the average man's love of liberty is nine-tenths imaginary, exactly like his love of sense, justice and truth. He is not actually happy when free; he is uncomfortable, a bit alarmed, and intolerably lonely. Liberty is not a thing for the great masses of men. It is the exclusive possession of a small and disreputable minority, like knowledge, courage and honor. It takes a special sort of man to understand and enjoy liberty - and he is usually an outlaw in democratic societies." -- H.L. Mencken, February 12, 1923, Baltimore Evening Sun
