Wal-Mart gun survey

Done, however the page I was sent to doesn't have a survey, it was just a blank comments page.

I just let them know I support them selling a product, the same as if MADD were threatening them because Wal-Mart sold Auto parts.

I called and talked to a customer assistant. She said the survey is REAL and took my name to pass on. She told me to tell everyone you know to call.

BTW, the link is to a blank comment form. Tell 'em what you think! :)

I can let corporate know but locally the stores tape tells the tale. In my current small town just before season is a cool glass case with not just semi hidden boxes of evil ammunituion, but careful displays of each representative cartridge displayed in all of their individual glory naked and out of the box standing proudly for identification.
Children frolic at eye level to these devices as a centerpiece of long arms tower above the scene.
I wrote them to complain about the lack of pistols only. Handgun ammo is prevalent. Business was booming.

I called. The rumor is false. There is currently one store in the US that doesn't sell guns and ammo. It is in Tampa,FL and is located next to a school. 12 other stores in Tampa carry guns and ammo, however. I recommend that you still call them, but be polite. The lady said they have received TONS of calls about this. I think we are making an important point to Wal-Mart about how much this matters to us...

Thanks for this heads-up.

I called, and spoke with a very helpful young woman ... she even has a carry permit!

She confirmed what Westtexas just indicated. I pointed out to her that there was no logic to not displaying guns near a school, and that Wal-Mart's exec's should stand tall, and make the logical, cogent case for their continued right to sell firearms. I suspect that what really happened was a BS zoning hearing, in which the municipality put this restriction on Wal-Mart in order to grant their zoning.

The out of control zoning powers of municipalities is another, loooong discussion ... ;)

Glad I called ... everyone should. Please, keep it very polite. I believe these are good folks ... they are an ally. Let's help them stay strong in the face of all this anti-self defense BS.

I called to express my displeasure. He told me the usual range of puffery ("we are still selling guns out of the catalog, just not in the store." and "We are doing it because of all the school violence."

I asked him how removing guns from a local Walmart would reduce school violence. His response was, "They didn't tell us how to answer that question."

Funny that the first question I decide to ask him is one that they never considered answering. Points to biased group-think of Walmart.

I contacted them today. The young lady who answered the phone was extremely polite and explained this was just the one store in Tampa next to some school as others have stated. I too asked how not selling guns there would make the children any safer. I also made it clear I think they should continue to sell firearms. Before I got off the phone, I asked why they didn't sell handguns anymore and she didn't have an answer. I got a mailing address too and will be writing a letter also. Has anyone noticed many of the stores no longer have Mini-14's and Mossburg 18" shotguns in the display cases anymore?

I never saw a 18" mossberg but I did see winchester defenders and I haven't seen them latly.I still see mini 14s in the display case but they are way to high on them.

They stoped selling the latest list of
'politically incorrect' weapons a few months back and from what Im told from wal-mart sports manager handguns as well.
Hopefully in some area's you can still order handguns from the catalong in my area NOT EVEN from the catalog.
My friend who leave a large NRA sticker on his gunwindow display told me he was told this ocurred after an employee sold someone a handgun before the FBI completed their 'instant' background check and despite that the employee did not have the clearence sold the customer the gun when they came back the NEXT day.
This person apparently used the gun to shoot someone ,wal-mart was sued and went to court and simply had the position 'how much do you want'.
Apparently the lack of handgun sales even by catalog and a stop on any shotguns under I beleive 24 inches. At my friends wal-mart hes still able to order the ruger mini 14 and the remmington 20 inch pump since its listed as a YOUTH gun.
Ill email him and see if hell further address the topic.
These fit for defense shotguns mossberg persuader and winchester defender it seems now go for a minimum of $250 up to $300 as walmart no longer sells them for as low as $199.00.
IF the shorter 7+1 12 guages are still at yours by them now at worst you can resell them for what you paid if not more.

A bit more to it from what I've read so far (in TFL, other sites & getting from e-mail) .....

Here's what I just found out as a photo-journalist representing The Partisan magazine (too true). Being a member of the press does help to open a few doors - not to mention just doing a bit of smoothing along & not being satisfied (neccessarily) with the standard party line first presented.

Called the 1-800-925-6278 # (then hit 1 & then 3 to blow by the menu) & got ahold of a very southern belle named Kim (who, BTW, had no personal opinion regarding firearms in the least as all is a "corporate decision" - end of story ... even after playing the "I grew up there game, etc." - just didn't fly).

I represented myself as a member of the press (true) & that the MMM is claiming a huge political/economic victory (re their petition & threatened boycot) - too, that the rumors are running rampant across the 'net that Wal-Mart has caved to the anti-forces & the pro-freedom folks are way upset.

As an unbiased reporter attempting to glean the true facts, I requested any possible clarification/s.

I was referred to 1-800-273-4314 = Kim/Arkansas (main headquarters), who is a company spokesperson. She said that the decision was made at the coporate level. She would not elaborate re her own personal views in the least.

Since I was was still unclear on the issue & wanted an unbiased truth from the source, she referred me to 1 (501) 273-4600 corporate Public Relations, where I talked briefly with another lady who paged another - who called me back.

Talking with Jessica/Corporate PR, (alternate & more personal I'd assume # 1 (501) 277-2989 ... oh, & not for general publication, BTW ;) ), she stated that the decision to not have firearms at the particular Tampa store was made over a year ago, and based on "unique community marketing" & feedback. According to her, no one at corporate is aware of any "800 signature petition" of any group, let alone the MMM. The decison was based on talking with community members, school faculty & store manager. "The school driveway can be hit with a stone thrown from the Wal-Mart store." No answer was forhcoming regarding why this particular store was singled out for the "community survey" as opposed to Tampa's other 12 Wal-Marts (other than, I presume, that it could be hit with a thrown rock.)

As an(other) aside, she stated that the county where Tampa is, has a mandatory 3-day waiting period for all firearm purchases & that this particular store still sells fireams but only through catalog sales. Any customer can still receive their firearm/s just as quickly through this store as they can from any other - it just isn't on premises till it is ordered (& after approval through background check, etc.).

Apparently, local customers support this decision. And, it in no way reflects Wal-Marts' policy regarding the selling of firearms.

Questioned about if "community pressure" would cause them to reverse their views re "no firearms in this particular store," she replied that they always listen to customers.

That's it - from them - as far as I could run it down tonight.

Wouldn't put it past the Moms that they caught wind of the unique sales method at this store & came up with a bogus claim that they shot firearms sales down through their political pressure. That would give them perceived huge political/economic clout (through zero real effort) against any future real scenario they'd care to involve themselves in = "sends the message."

Too, wouldn't put it past Wal-Mart to lie about the whole thing to smooth this over in the most nuetral way they could ..... beats me.

I still don't think we've the whole truth.

"Grass Roots North Carolina, P.O. Box 10684, Raleigh, NC 27605

GRNC Alert 9-23-00: Wal-Mart eliminates Guns & Ammo from Tampa store

[BACKGROUND INFO] Last year, Wal-Mart received complaints from the local PTSA, MMM, and other anti-gun advocacy groups regarding the construction of a new Wal-Mart to be located next to a high school in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. The issue seemed headed for a reasonable settlement in August
when Wal-Mart spokeswomen Jessica Moser announced that the new Wal-Mart would,
indeed, offer rifles and shotguns.

Now Wal-Mart has reversed its decision after the Tampa Bay chapter of the Million Mom March and the Florida Coalition to Stop Gun Violence promised to picket the store, collected 800 names on a petition, and even threatened a nationwide boycott of Wal-Mart through the national branch of the MMM.

According to a 9-22-00 article in the St. Petersburg Times, the anti-gun groups organized two community meetings and papered the area with fliers encouraging people to attend and protest Wal-Mart's decision. Cathy Wilson, president of the local Million Mom March, called the Wal-Mart decision the
new organization's first victory. "We were a force to be reckoned with," she said. "We were not going to back down."

[ANALYSIS] In this case, David didn't even have to sling the stone to fell Goliath. The enemies of the "gun-culture" have now tasted the blood of the largest retailer in America, which quietly folded when faced with a boycott threat from the Commie Mommies. The implication is straight-forward: Having guns, even venerable hunting rifles and shotguns, anywhere near our
children, even in a store, locked behind a cabinet in a separate building, will not be tolerated. Needless to say, if we say nothing, we can expect more and more of this kind of nonsense.

Wal-Mart's decision is illogical... What new research has indicated that the proximity of a firearms retailer to a school is associated with higher school crime rates? If a Wal-Mart is a threat to our children when it's on the same block as a school, why isn't it a threat when it's two blocks
away?... five blocks away? What radius around a school will the gun-control
freaks say is okay? If we do nothing, maybe the Mommies will allow guns & ammo to be sold next to the porn shop on the outskirts of town...Maybe not.

We have seen the war against guns waged in the legislature. We have seen the war move into the courts with a slew of city law suits. Now the war is being fought in the marketplace, and we just got our asses kicked in the first major battle.

[ACTION] Wal-Mart is a profit-seeking business. Millions of gun-owners and hunters spend billions of dollars on sporting supplies and other household goods at Wal-Mart. We need to let Wal-Mart know, to paraphrase the gleeful Cathy Wilson, that "We are a force to be reckoned with, we will not back down."

Wal-Mart is currently conducting a numerical survey of the chain's customer base regarding the sale of guns and ammo in their outlets.

Call Wal-Mart at:

* (800) 925-6278 and

* select menu option #1 for Wal-Mart Customer Hotline, then

* select menu option #4 to speak to a representative in C.E.O. Lee Scott's office. Be patient, you may have to wait a few minutes.

Tell them that they are sending a very offensive message to hunters and gunowners and that you will not tolerate it. If they continue to eliminate guns and ammo from their stores, you will take your business to Target or some other store.

Wal-Mart needs to hear from a large numbers of us. They need to know we are offended. They need to know we think their decision is illogical. They need to know we are organized and won't sit quietly while guns are vilified and banned from the marketplace.

Pass this e-mail on to ALL of your friends and acquaintances who hunt or participate in any shooting sport."
