Wake up Gun Owners

Today Panera, a place I often go to for breakfast, announced that they are asking customers not to carry guns inside their stores. This is due to pressure from Moms Against Guns, a group of soccer moms who have no idea of how to use a gun. They are now going against Kroger. It all starts the same. They approach the chain stores and the chain replies by saying that they abide by State and Local laws. Then MAG threatens to boycott and we have yet another large chain of stores asking us to not carry guns in their stores.

It is time that the NRA or some pro gun organization step in and stop this plot by MAG. They are going from national store chain to chain to get them to ban guns. If this keeps up unopposed, we will only be carrying guns in our own homes and in public places. This is the same strategy used to ban smoking by limiting the places where you could smoke.

In many States, gun banning in stores is not enforceable BUT, they can enforce it if they catch you under trespassing laws, as happens here in Florida. Sure I can make sure that I am 100% concealed but I do not feel that I have to sneak into stores and be concerned if my gun is printing a little. I should not feel unwelcome where I go.

As a matter of principle, I do not spend money in anti gun stores but I have to say, that I am starting to run out of places to go. Panera is the only place in walking distance where I can get breakfast. Now I will have to drive which I do not want to do. Sure I can put a gun in my pocket and still go to Panera but do I want to enhanced the profits of an anti gun chain store?

I am not a big fan of the NRA although they seem to have the most clout for our cause. My problem with them is that they tend to preach to the choir. They say and do things that will bring in donations, members and membership renewals. They do not seem to do much other than tell us what we want to hear. No one I know recalls reading any Pro-gun positive stories from the NRA. What they hear is the answer to protecting children from guns is to put more guns where they are. While we may understand that logic, non gun owners do not and they are the ones that we need on our side.

We need the great majority of people who sit on the fence of the gun debate. They are not moved to vote one way or the other but MAG and similar groups go after them. They talk to them in their own language. They do not show them pictures of men dressed like soldiers armed to the teeth saying things about their cold dead hands. Who do we have that can approach national retailers and convince them that they will lose a lot of customers if they take an anti gun policy. So far, only MAG is doing the threatening.

So far what I have seen is counter productive. Protesting while waving around AR15's while holding a child in your arms is not the way to go. It is feel good stuff for gun owners but does nothing to win over the people who sit on the fence of corporation America. What say you?

Gun owners just need to vote with their wallets. A new Panera opened recently where I live and I refuse to spend a dime there. The only thing that matters to a business is the bottom line and dropping revenue gets their attention...

It’s true that corporations are primarily focused on profits, but I doubt that boycotts will have much impact. Companies are making a calculated decision that “requesting” no guns will hurt them less than a bunch of Bloomberg’s crowd protesting their stores. Also, like it or not pro-gun supporters protesting an anti-gun policy just never seems to look good in the media.

As for the NRA I would like to see them initiate a more visible campaign to counter the misinformation and outright lies of these groups, but that cost money. Also, I’m not sure how receptive many media outlets are to running these types of ads.

Also, the point of preaching to the choir is a valid one, but the real problem is that the choir isn’t responding. If gun owners would wake up and support the NRA-ILA, vote, call politicians, etc. instead of stockpiling 10,000 rounds of .22lr we might make some progress.
