wake up call- suddenly no CCW permit (rant)

despite my efforts to the contary my pistol permit expired recently. the county drones say my new permit should come in in several weeks. let me say this crap is not my fault. i moved to a new county and i jumped thru every hoop they put up to keep track of paper work and i called 4 months in advance for an appointment for renewal. here in N.C. we have to do the fingerprint bull over again at renewal time and cough up $90.00. plus my county sends off requests to all the nut houses to see if you are a closet wacko. long story short, i called 4 months in advance, i was told i had to call back 2 months before expiration. when i called the county drone says "the first appointment we have for fingerprinting is 25 days from now!!" man was i hot!! i said up front "that puts me applying for a renewal only 30 days before expiration and if i do that i am screwed". i was told there was nothing to do except take that appointment. if i did not want it fine, however if i did not reapply before expiration of my permit i would have to take the $75.00 saftey and law course over again.
so here i am the day after my original permit expired. my new permit may take from 1 to 4 weeks to come in (per Sheriff's office). i was told it was not a problem, just stop carrying concealed until the permit arrives. JUST THAT FREAKING SIMPLE HUH. GEE I HOPE SOME BAD GUY DOES NOT DECIDE THAT THIS MONTH IS THE MONTH TO TRY AND ROB/CARJACK/KIDDNAP SOME FAMILY AT RANDOM!!
A$$HOLES, IF I DID NOT HAVE TO GET HURT TO DO IT I ALMOST WISH SOMTHING WOULD HAPPEN SO I COULD SUE THE PANTS OFF OF THEM.

i guess i will carry a pistol on the seat of my car (UNCONCEALED) for protection while driving. and i guess i will curtail as much around town activity as i can until the papermill grinds out my permit. what pi$$es me off is that we are all jumping thru hoops for what is our RIGHT to begin with. a privilige is what you get permits for driving cars, building, conducting business. not for a right like free speech or packing a gun. we have only had CCW permits in N.C. for four years now but that taste of freedom is a heady wine. i will not go back to being a sheep.
WE NEED VERMONT STYLE CARRY LAWS NOW IN EVERY STATE.
bad guys are not worrying about permits, bet on that.

Hey at least you only have to wait 1 to 4 weeks. I am still waiting for the any day now letter from the OSBI to tell me my license is ready. BTW-I submitted my packet on March 10th. :mad: "I feel your pain". And I don't have the option of carrying unconcealed in the truck during the wait. Of course the fine for carrying without a permit is only $100.00 which is less than I paid for the class and licensing procedures. another :mad: ! But if I was to be involved in a shooting I don't want to be held liable for carrying illegally.
 
In TN, it's an affirmative defense to a charge of going armed without a permit if that weapon is used in self-defense. I love my state!
 
ROS, please take the time to contact your state Representatives and make them aware of this. Get some friends to floow through too.

I have always been of the opinion that I will carry legally as long as they give me a legal avenue to do so. When they cease giving me a legal avenue, I will continue to carry.

I'm not sure what the deal is where you are, but I was under the understanding that NC was shall issue, and that the clock was 90 days by LAW. I live in about the most anti-gun area in NC (I'll give you a hint, we are legally required to register handguns at city hall...)

I called and asked about the timing about day 89. They had a "mistake" on the file saying that they had another 40 days. I let the person on the telephone know that My copy of the applications indicated that they were to issue me a permit, or denial with a valid reason, by the next day. I had a permit in only a day or so over.....

If you start to make a few polite phone calls to reps offices, you might be suprised at the reponse.

In indiana when you go to renew as long as you have your receipt along with your old or expired permit it is ok. By the way it only took me 4 weeks to get my permit in indiana and for all of you out there, your permit is honored here too!
 
I renewed my permit by mail in PA, a whole $20 or so for 5 years. In addition, you can legally carry for up to 6 months after the expiration of your permit here. FWIW, the county sent me a renewal notice several months in advance, I just wrote the check and the permit came back about two weeks later. I guess I shouldn't complain about our CCW law. :)

riddleofsteel and TJ2: Sounds like both of you might be living in the People's Republic of Durham County. I have a close friend who went through the same type of hassle. He eventually had to call the State AG office to get them to move their butts. As I understand it's the same way with getting pistol purchase permits. I live in Wake so I haven't had too much trouble, although I've heard that our Sheriff will not give any new class III licenses.
