Waiting on an SP101

I placed a call to the gunshop back home today(I'm at school) and ordered my 3" SP101. Back ordered.... UGH! I've got two weeks until I turn 21 and this is the highlight of my birthday! Hopefully something works out or I'll just have to visit some competing shops. I hope my wait isn't too long!

I thought this post was about a nice young man turning 21, so my comments will only relate to that matter. Good for you my friend, and congrats!!!! I hope you get your SP101, good choice!!! Coogs.

Congratulations on both. Glad you made a wise decision and itll be well worth the wait even if its a month! I had to order my sp101 in 2+1/4 hammerless b/c no one here carries them and sp's are hard to come by. my wait was a week! It and the $408 i paid were well worth it. and it is a fine partner to my 4+1/4 GP, shoots just as well as it does! Id like a 6" GP eventualy but i think my next pistol might be a 45 blackhawk bisley. anyways what was it persuaded you to go revolver? i know most young guys go for the plastic fantastic.

Crank, I'm have more of an old-school mentality than most my age. I am called Old Man by many of my friends. To add, I don't have a ton of experience with handguns, so when someone put the first revolver in my hands and I actually started hitting targets was a eye-opener for me. Prior to that, I thought I was just a terrible shot with the random assortment of Ruger and Glock semi-auto's. My uncle let me try a GP100 and it was an instantaneous difference. Ever since, I'll shoot revolvers far better than any semi-auto. I did get a chance to shoot a SP101 lately, and after the aftenoon and a few boxes of ammo were done, I knew my choice was clear. Revolvers are the way to go!

EDIT: And plus this Brassrat finds revolvers far easier for reloading brass. Even in my young age, the bending down to pick up brass after an afternoon of shooting, is just a pain.

I see we have a few things in common although against dads preaching against automatic guns of any kind i bought a nine first go around. although it is a great gun it turns out dad was right all along. And back in high school some of my buddies referred to me as grandpa. Possibly due to my old fashioned ways.Congratulations again and enjoy your new piece.

Thank you Sir! I have nothing against semi-auto's, as it kind of peeves me that I can't shoot them well. I plan on getting one eventually but it won't be a plasto-pistol. Something like a good 1911, or even a CZ75 would be right up my alley!

I imagine with Ruger suspending orders until May 1st, it'll be a month or so if I go through the local gunshop. He's got a great price, and it's tempting to wait it out, but if I could find one between then and now for a bit more... Tempting..

If I were getting two "first" guns, one would definitely be a .22 rimfire, revolver or semi. Both the SP and the GP are good solid centerfire pistols.

The .22 allows you to get ten times as much practice for about the same price.

Practice, practice, practice!

A .22 is on my list for sure! I just wanted a revolver that I could carry if I decided to get my permit. If the gun turns out to be too much to handle, I'll just shoot .38 Spl's out of it instead of the .357's just to ease off the power/difficulty in shooting for this newbie. I've kind of been thinking the .22 version of the SP101 would be a nice addition to the centerfire version, but at the same time I really like the Single-6. I'm not trying to come across as a Ruger fan-boy or some kind of snob, I generally don't care for many Ruger products, until it comes to their revolvers. I think they built them well, and offer them at a fairly competitive pricepoint. And I don't see anything wrong with that!

Nothing wrong with a fan of ruger apparently the rest of america sees the same points you do as theyre the only company ive heard of having to suspend orders on new guns this year. Im not a fan of most ruger semi autos i dont like their look except for the lc9 which they cant make enough of. Their revolvers are the best there are for the money. I like the gp,sp and blackhawks but i dont realy like the look of that skinny barrel sticking out of the half lug on the redhawks but generaly theyre all great guns.

If your shooting fundamentals are in order (that is to say sight alignment, trigger squeeze, stance, breath control, etc.), I'm not sure as to why your shooting a revolver vs a semi-auto has such a big disparity ("terrible" shooting with the semi-auto vs "eye-opening" target hitting with the revolver) in terms of accuracy-which isn't to say that some don't find it easier to shoot a revolver over a semi-auto and vice-versa.

In any event, I'm sure that you will be very satisfied with your choice of the Ruger Model SP101-it's a fine revolver indeed.

Crankgrinder, I'll agree with you on the LC9. Might be a ways off, but I do like them.

dgludwig: I can agree with you to a point, but I think the semi-auto's that I have struggled shooting accurately just left more to be desired by myself. I don't know how else to explain it. Going from a Glock 19 and not shooting it well, then 5 minutes later a GP100 and shooting WAY better, after that going to a Ruger P345 and shooting similarly as I did with the Glock. This isn't the only time it's happened, just one good example.

Thank you for the kind words about the SP101 though... I always get nervous about a purchase this big, but it's nice to keep hearing peoples like/appreciation for it. Even after all the reading I've done on it.

sp101

I have one (3" .357) and want at least 4 more that I can think of off the top of my head (3" .327, old version of the .22 (3", 6 shot IIRC), 4" .357, and the newer 4" .22).

.... I'm a semi-auto guy!

Im not a fan of most ruger semi autos i dont like their look

The sR9c is ugly, yes, but it works, and fits my hand better than any Glock, and I think the trigger is better, too.

Their 1911 is the next handgun on my list.

My guess is that you have found the trigger pull of a good revolver compared to those of some mediocre semi-autos (in terms of trigger pulls) conducive to and easier to attain better accuracy with.

I have a 3 inch and I love it, handles heavy loads without problems, accurate, ( I had to send mine back due to it printing left, Ruger took care of it ), great woods gun, just enough weight to hold steady but not too much to carry all day. The bianchi holster made for it works great, but it's not what you would call a "concealment holster" its more of a small belt holster.
A winter jacket covers it nicely. BTW I shoot revolvers double action way better than autos, I don't know why, only when shooting my Glocks do I come close.
