wadcutters

So, I ended up picking up the S&W 640-1 for 320 after taxes with a free box of ammo. My dilemma is this; I cannot find any wadcutters to practice with!!!

I literally went to five gun-shops in the greater Indianapolis area and Wal-Mart and none of which sold wadcutters. I would make my own, but unfortunately, I don’t have my own press. Anyone know of a good internet site to pick up some light-loaded .38s to work up to full .357mags? Thanks.

Sorry. I misread pistol model number. Match grade ammo or custom loaded ammo should be available in .38 Special with full wadcutters. If you reload, should be simple to find the full wadcutter or semi-wadcutter bullet you prefer.

Good shooting and be safe.

The 640-1 is actually a .357mag, not a .44. Would this make a difference in availability for finding wadcutters? I do not think I am opposed to using semi-wadcutters, only I don't really know what they are. :D

Care to enlighten me?

The reason why I was wanting .38 special wadcutters is something light and easy to practice with. Eventually, we'll work ourselves up to .357 mag.

Are reloads ok? If so, you might want to check out Mastercast. I've tried and used their .38 spl 158gr SWC's and their .38 spl 100gr WC's, and both seem to be good ammo. Service is reasonably fast, and the price is right. The 100gr WC's seem to be quite accurate in my 686 and the recoil is very mild. The 158gr SWC's are accurate as well, and the recoil is still pretty light.

For example of bullet styles, see www.lymanproducts.com under casting/moulds for the following bullets:
#358091 = full wadcutter bullet (cuts nice clean round hole, primarily used for target shooting but also is good self-defense bullet)

#358477 = semi-wadcutter bullet (also cuts nice clean hole in target, more streamlined nose retains velocity better for long range shots)

Good shooting and be safe.

ps: Apologize for typing errors. Burned fingertips on left hand today and have to type with one hand tonight.

This is an example of a wadcutter bullet. This is an example of a semi wadcutter bullet.

Wadcutters are essentially cylindrical, often with a hollow base. The flat meplat gives a clean cut hole in targets, making for easy scoring. Semi wadcutters have a sharp shoulder, then a conical section and a flat meplat. The sharp shoulder of the semi wadcutters also leave a clean hole in targets.
