I was watching CNN and was appaled by what I saw. I can't believe this is happening again. They kept reffering to the community as "Compound" and at one point even showed a man walking into church in his sunday clothes(black slacks and blue button up shirt) and said he was wearing the "uniform" of this militant "cult". Anybody who has ever SEEN a church knows that people wear their good clothes when they go for service. I realize that this jeff guy is a criminal, but why bother trying to show how "evil" he and his "followers" are unless you wanted to justify something. And how exactly does someone get on the FBI's most wanted list for something like palligamy anyways.

There is certainly an unfair portrayal of Mormonism in many areas of the media but I've known Mormons to refer to their own compounds many times using that very terminology. Did they use the term "militant cult"? While I wouldn't call slacks and a pressed shirt a uniform it's understandable how it could be seen as such if every member of the congregation is wearing the same.

edit: I never understood why people wear their "sunday best"....jeans and a tshirt for me, usually. I wear to Mass nothing fancier than I wear to work

Did they use the term "militant cult"?

The term they used was "doomsday cult" and they kept talking about their beliefs as a threat.

They talked about how they beleive when judgement day comes, they will be the only ones left after gods wrath. CNN made a point of focusing on this and worded it like a threat. Just about every Christian oriented religion employs this same belief in one way or another.

i am just going to add a little disclaimer in the form of an article from the Deseret News about how the LDS church feels about this new media frenzy.

Article here...

as an active member of the "mainstream" mormon church it has been a bit frustrating watching CNN, FOX, MSNBC, and other channels talk about warren jeffs and not distinguish that he is not part of the LDS church at all. it is kinda like saying the episcopalians or protestants are catholics because they broke off from them.

this thread is in danger of getting shut down because it deals with religious topics so i hope it doesnt go crazy and some real issues can be discussed.

oh i apologize for the double post but if i may offer a reason as to why thy put jeffs on the top ten list is becasue it appears that he is also running an organized crime family, a very very large family. and the FBI wants to get him on things like money laundering to tax fraud to racketeering and so forth. they are treating it like a mafia/mob type situation, and jeffs is the "godfather". the small charges they have against him now are just a foot in the door so they can then open up his organization and nail him on more crimes. remember they only got al capone on tax evasion...

Sorry, but this one *is* off topic. It is a religious issue and the discussion is centering around how the "mainstream" media is treating it. No link to firearms or legal matters or government is apparent that I can see.

Gotta close it.
