Vortex Scope Question

Hi folks, I'm back seeking knowledge.

I went to a sporting goods store today and had the opportunity to look through both the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-4 and the Viper 1-6.

Granted, I was inside the store, but I compared both scopes at 1x power and both at 4x power. I didn't take the Viper to 6x because I didn't feel that would be a fair comparison.

I didn't see much of a difference between the two so I'm here asking "what am I missing?"

I took note to pay attention to the edges, center, try reading some boxes 60 feet down the isle, took note of brightness, sharpness, contrast, etc.

The one thing I did notice was that the Strike Eagle was far easier to get my eyeball behind. With the Viper, my eyeball had to be precisely positioned to get the full picture, but with the Strike Eagle, it just seemed like there was more room to move around without the picture going all shady on the edges.

The Viper was clearer and sharper, but I had to flip-flop back and forth several times and intentionally look for the difference to see it, and even then, it was barely noticeable.. and I could even argue that it was physiological to some extent.

So what am I missing? Is it that the jump from the Strike Eagle to the Viper really isn't a jump at all but more of a half-step up? Or is it that I was in the store under good lighting and one needs poor lighting to really see the difference?

What is it that I should have seen that I didn't?

If you can, see if the store will let you walk outside with them.
Big difference between inside the store and outside.
