Volquartsen or Shilen?

Today I bought a 10/22 from the local pawn shop, and already I'm thinking of what i can do to make it more accurate :D the first purchase will be a thumbhole stock and a new barrel. I have it narrowed down to 2 barrels: a Shilen ss varmint barrel, and a volquartsen stainless match barrel. I was wondering if anyone had experience with both of these brands, and which they find to be more accurate. Any input is greatly appreciated, want to get it right when spending this kind of money.

hmm, that's another consideration. Dangit! I'm sure the groups with your barrel would be the same as the Volquartsen I'm looking at. What kind of groups were you getting as far as MOA? also does anyone have any interest on the clarks barrels? which barrels will be the most accurate?

I've owned both barrels and used them in Team Challenge Competition. I've shot thousands of rounds out of both and on the two I had (two is not a very large sample size) the Volquartzen handily outshot the Shilen. I shot that game for ten years and it was my observation of many competitors guns that the Shilen barrel was pretty good but definately not the best for accuracy. My Volquartzen would, under ideal conditions, shoot five shot groups under an inch at 100 yds. I hear a lot of people saying they get that kind of accuracy on a regular basis but I have seen it very rarely in competition. Just my $.02

hey thanks! that's good information. My friend has a 10/22 with the Shilen barrel and he has put down one five shot 1/4 moa group, and regularily does 1/2 moa groups. It's quite impressive. I have read very good things about the Volquartsen though as well, and it is a little bit cheaper. I also like the look better. I am leaning towards the Volquartsen right now, but want to make sure it's the right choice before going ahead with it. thanks a lot for the input! :)

also do you know if the Volquartsen's are capable of taking ammo like velocitors? i heard some of the target barrels can't take the larger cartridges? not sure what to think of that

Here's another excellent option:

and the Green Mountain barrels I have are also all great, especially for the money.

Volquartsen or Kidd would be my top choices, based purely on my own admittedly limited experience. All that I have are very accurate, and nicely crafted.

I don't have any experience with Shilen for a .22, do have one centerfire with a Shilen barrel that's very nice.

Get a Kidd trigger along with a Kidd barrel and I'm certain you'll be very happy. But I don't think you'd regret going with VQ all around either, although I definitely prefer the Kidd trigger over VQ....

Like I posted my 10/22 was redone by Volquartsen as a package and more was done that adding just a barrel. I think the extra work helped with the accuracy and be hard comparing 10/22.

I would recommend taking a look at KIDD barrels as well. They are amazingly accurate when you do your job. I have a complete KIDD rifle and it is better than an other I've shot including Volquartsen. Mine is capable of averaging a quarter inch at 50 yards with top notch ammo. Even CCI SV will average in the high .3s to low .4s at 50 with the KIDD barrel.

Take a look at all their products, their triggers are hands down the best available

In my experience Volquartsen barrels are the best....as far as ammo sensitive, they can cut the chamber to your specifics.

thanks a lot for the input guys. I have already decided on the kidd trigger group, and I may have to take a look at the barrels too. on the ammo concerns I'm hoping to get by with a drop in barrel. will the drop in's work with all ammo?
