Virginian Dragoon or not?

Dragoon

Inactive
I saw an Interarms Virginian Dragoon in a shop. It was chambered 45 LC with a 5 inch bbl, adjustable rear sight, in blue with wood grips. It had the snake and "don't tread on me" stamped on the bottom and the "Virginiam Dragoon 1973" stamped on the side. I have read that the early models made by Hammerli did not come in 45 or 5 inch bbl length. Is it possible that this has been modified or is a fake. I also read that they weren't called Dragoons until 1979.

Possibly it said 1873 as the model designation? I believe they were made in 45 Long Colt and 44 Magnum. They are excellent in every respect. I don't think it would be a likely fake. A friend has three and really likes them.

It's a '76 or later built Dragoon. The Hammerli versions were manufactured from '73 - '75 and were pretty much Colt clones. There's an article on my website that covers the history of the Virginian revolver if interested.

Thanks Erich...

glad you enjoy it. I'll be posting more articles within the next few months to include a history of the North American Arms .450 Magnum Express and .414 SuperMag load/test data.

Thanks for tips

Thanks for the info. sir William and Lee Martin. That article is very helpful.
Do you think in good condition it would be worth $229? Some articles put the value around $160.

Forget the articles. Swiss watch of the single action world. $229.00? Don't walk, RUN and buy that! I don't see them for less than $400.00 in my area. If I weren't already involved in so many deals, I would buy at that price.

I had one in .44 magnum, but I was far from impressed with it. The trigger was not bad on it, but the barrel was not indexed properly, and even with the adjustable sight maxed out to the right, it was still shooting almost 2 feet to the right at 50 ft. Accuracy was nowhere near what my Ruger Old Model Super Blackhawk was, either (when checking the groups 2 ft to the right of the intended target). I traded it to a friend who wanted something to play around with and try fixing. I don't think he's touched it yet, though.

I paid $150 for mine. It was SS. I don't know if they all are or not. I'm really not that familiar with them. I just saw it cheap and picked it up. I could have spent the $150 on something better.

dragoon 357 mag

I too have one(virginian dragoon) in the 357 mag cal I truely love it. But I was looking for a new set of grips such as rubber pachmayr or something similar. please let me know whats out there.
Thanks so very much for any info,

When I bought mine, it had the Pachmayer grips on it. I ordered a set of wood grips because I liked them better. I don't know if they still make them for the Dragoon, but it's worth a visit to their website to check if that's what you want.

Sorry, years ago, when I sold the Dragoon, I gave my friend both sets of grips with it. If I still had them, I'd give them to you.
