Virginia Legislative Update February 14, 2001

HB1969, the bill that will end the Alexandria Gun Ban
is coming up for a vote soon in the Senate. Alexandria
has posted "No Guns" signs on city buildings in violation
of Virginia law. HB1969 will FORCE Alexandria to
remove these signs! In addition it will prevent other
local governments from trying to pull the same stunt!

So far HB1969 is the only pro-gun bill to make it out of
the House. However, this is no sure thing folks. HB1969
barely made it out of the Senate Committee on Local
Government.

Subject: SUPPORT HB1969!

Dear Senator:

Please support HB1969! Politicians in Alexandria and
Arlington need to shown that they are not above the law.

If you don't pass HB1969 local governments will continue
to violate the law with impunity!

I urge you to support HB1969!

Sincerely,
John T. Hancock

Fascinhating . . .

When I came home this evening there was a msg on my answering machine urging me to call my state senator and tell him to vote against HB 1969. It didn't identify the source/sponsoring organization of the call, but it did motivate me to resolve to call my senator first thing tomorrow and tell him that I expect him to support HB 1969 and that I deeply resent being tarred with the brush that says if I have a gun I'm likely to commit a crime. VA CCW holders are among the most law abiding citizens in the state and that we are not the problem. I am a decorated veteran, former Boy Scout, heavy duty tax payer and I vote in every election. I will also express my disappointment that I still cannot get a decent meal (i.e. eat in a non-fast food restraunt) if I chose to exercise my second amendment rights and civil right of self defense. Needless to say, I'm pi$$ed off to beat the band.

What's happening with...

HB1230 Concealed Carry Recognition...(reciprocity) that we were hoping would include the restaurant ban repeal?

No. The reciprocity and restaurant ban repeal are two seperate issues. The restaurant ban repeal failed in the house and probably will not be resurected in the Senate this year. The reciprocity bill made it out of the house and might make it through the Senate if enough gun owners lean on the Senators.

I suggest that everyone here go to the VCDL page for more info. Also writing to each member of the VA Senate couldn't hurt.

I called the constituent hot line (1-800-889-0229) and left a message for Scott and Howell urging them to pass HB1969. But are pretty liberal Democraps, whose campaign literature is consistently anti-self defense, but I WILL be heard. I also e-mailed Howell. Last time I got a rather patronizing response, but I will keep chipping away and keep letting them know there is other intelligence and other viewpoints in the universe, and I vote.

Unfortunately, I have a commitment this evening and won't be able to make the VCDL mtg.
