Virginia Gun Purchases delayed

Any other Virginia residents who've had their gun purchases "delayed" this week? I started a transfer at a local gun shop on Tuesday (12/20) and STILL don't have approval two days later! I called the State Police's Firearms Transaction Center to ask what the problem is and they said they're swamped and they'll get to it as soon as they can. Oh well, so much for Instant Check.

I always get delayed and the waits can be longer around the holidays.
At least you haven been denied.

2. The State Police shall provide its response to the requesting dealer during the dealer's request, or by return call without delay. If the criminal history record information check indicates the prospective purchaser or transferee has a disqualifying criminal record or has been acquitted by reason of insanity and committed to the custody of the Commissioner of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, the State Police shall have until the end of the dealer's next business day to advise the dealer if its records indicate the buyer or transferee is prohibited from possessing or transporting a firearm by state or federal law. If not so advised by the end of the dealer's next business day, a dealer who has fulfilled the requirements of subdivision 1 of this subsection may immediately complete the sale or transfer and shall not be deemed in violation of this section with respect to such sale or transfer. In case of electronic failure or other circumstances beyond the control of the State Police, the dealer shall be advised immediately of the reason for such delay and be given an estimate of the length of such delay. After such notification, the State Police shall, as soon as possible but in no event later than the end of the dealer's next business day, inform the requesting dealer if its records indicate the buyer or transferee is prohibited from possessing or transporting a firearm by state or federal law. A dealer who fulfills the requirements of subdivision 1 of this subsection and is told by the State Police that a response will not be available by the end of the dealer's next business day may immediately complete the sale or transfer and shall not be deemed in violation of this section with respect to such sale or transfer.

I always get a delay. Last firearm i purchased the lgs actually got a call 2days later with a "GO". I usually pick up my firearm 5 days later from the LGS because of a delay. Now i wish my suppresor would get a green light already.

Thanks for that link, alloy. I'm surprised my FFL store doesn't seem to know about that. I think I'll print that out and "enlighten" them. It's now been 3 days. That's ridiculous. I'm used to leaving with my purchase in 15 to 30 minutes. The State Police rep I spoke with last night said they're shorthanded and swamped with requests. If the economy is so bad, how are people affording all of these gun purchases? Maybe things are lookin' up!

The Instant Check system has been getting worse and worse over the past few years.

The Virginia Citizen's Defense League is pushing hard to get the Virginia Assembly to make changes to the system, including hiring more people (apparently the staff is down since Virginia is, or was, in a hiring freeze due to the economy) and expanding the system to give it greater capabilities.

Things got bad from Black Friday when sales jumped about 30% above normal and sales have continued to be high !

We would like to eliminate the state check altogether and just use the federal system. That would also require getting rid of the one handgun a month law. Things are much more favorable this year than in the last few years due to the tie in the Senate, no gun bill death committees this term.

I'd definitely be for that.

It was finally approved this morning, so I was able to take the gun home. 3 days in an Instant Check state is just not acceptable. I may as well live in (gasp!) Maryland!!!!!! :D

Gun sales are crazy this year. I went to Green Top in Richmond last weekend to buy some scope bases and it took me 30 minutes to make it to the counter. It was shoulder-to-shoulder with people filling out paper work for new purchases.

I spoke to an employee a couple of months ago. They have 7 positions, but 2 were vacant.

Ho - ho - ho. :)

I'm a state employee. There has been a hiring freeze all year. You have to beg to get permission to fill a vacancy.

I live in VA and the longest I ever waited was maybe 20 min. I also provide my SSN#, I've been told that moves things along sometimes.
