Dear Violence Policy Center Action Network Member:

Traditionally "pro-gun" states in the South and West lead the nation in overall firearm death rates according to a new analysis issued this month by the Violence Policy Center. The analysis reveals that the top 10 states with the highest per capita gun death rates were Louisiana, Alaska, Wyoming, New Mexico, Alabama, Nevada, Mississippi, Montana, Arizona, and Arkansas (see http://www.vpc.org/fadeathchart.htm for a ranking of all 50 states). Each of the top 10 states had a per capita gun death rate of at least 15 per 100,000, far exceeding the national per capita gun death rate of 10.36 per 100,000. The study received strong television press coverage in many of the top 10 states. In the press release (see
http://www.vpc.org/press/0602rank.htm), VPC Executive Director Josh Sugarmann stated, "All of these states pride themselves on being `pro-gun'-but the numbers show that guns kill."

Less than a week later, Vice President Dick Cheney starkly illustrated that being pro-gun offers no guarantee of protection from firearms injury. Following the Vice-President's shooting of a fellow hunter, the VPC issued a press release (see http://www.vpc.org/press/0602cheney.htm) stating: "Saturday's shooting of a fellow hunter by Vice President Dick Cheney was just one more addition to the more than quarter million Americans who have been injured by firearms during President George W. Bush's tenure....From 2001 through 2003, the most recent year available, nearly 30,000 Americans a year were killed by firearms...."

Cheney has been the Administration's most vocal pro-gun voice, addressing the National Rifle Association's Annual Meeting in 2004. In his speech to NRA members, Cheney described himself and President Bush as "lifelong gun owners, hunters, and anglers--and strong believers in the Bill of Rights of the Constitution. Like many of you, I grew up close to the land, learned from my dad how to handle a gun, and still look forward to every chance to join up with friends to go hunting." (Please see http://www.vpc.org/cheney.htm for a copy of the speech from the NRA's America's 1st Freedom Magazine.)

Finally, the VPC's Josh Sugarmann has begun writing a blog for The Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/). To see his past columns, visit http://www.huffingtonpost.com/josh-sugarmann/.

Thank you, as always, for your efforts to stop gun death and injury.

"Thank you, as always, for your efforts to stop gun death and injury." Well, naturally I always try to do my part, Josh, you ol' devil.:D

whoooooooooooo hooooooooooooooooooo! top ten! alaska rules!

btw, if we had 15 per 100,000, that means we had a whopping total of 90 deaths.

I love it! They are using the CDC search engine which does not separate police actions or gang actions from accidental deaths unless you specifically tell it to, and then it only separates accidental deaths from the rest. The CDC engine offers no way to separate police shootings from gang on gang murders. Gotta love them government agencies!!

Homicide rates are probably more related to the deterioration of the family than to gun ownership.

If you consider that the highest homicide rate is within intimate relationships, and within the Black community you come to a better understanding of what is actually going on within the quoted numbers. Alaska would be an anomaly in terms of Black population, but it has very high rates of divorce, polyamory and batchelorhood all of which produce a lot of unhappy jealous people.

Eghad, the CDC has paid for most of the recent anti-gun studies... And you want them to what? LOL

yeh.. wishful thinking on my part. What was I thinking.

but you will be happy to learn that the official in charge of protecting us from bioterrorism and health crisis was a lawyer for Amtrak.

feel better now?

What about FLORIDA!!!!!!!!

Dang it! I was hoping with the "Kill The Tourists" act we just passed, we would exceed everyone in deaths per capita.....
