Violence Flares Outside Gore Mansion
If the presidential crisis has been nerve-racking for Vice President Al Gore and President-elect George Bush, it's been even tougher on some of their supporters.
Tempers flared this weekend in Washington, D.C., as protesters for and against Gore gathered outside his home at the Naval Observatory.
On Saturday night a Gore supporter had a sign ripped out of her hands while witnesses say a pro-Bush protester was the victim of a deliberate hit and run driver.
An anti-Gore demonstrator from the website FreeRepublic.com gave this account of the altercation:
"A female Bush supporter was intentionally hit by a car driven by a Gore supporter who steered his car over a corner knocking the woman over. The woman was not seriously injured, but no arrest was made because the driver, accompanied by a woman who cursed at and gave 'the finger' to the Bush supporter, drove away."
D.C. police were given a description of the car along with its license plate number but it's not clear whether the offending driver has been arrested.
After the hit and run, Gore and Bush protesters hurled insults and obscenities at each other until Secret Service joined police to restore order.
Two weeks ago, a 13-year-old Bush supporter was slugged in the stomach at a similar demonstration by a Gore supporter angered by the boy's "Sore Loserman" sign.
