about Bush meeting with vietnam leaders? these commies are saying they need Americas help so thier people will have better lives.

this was a topic on a local radio talk show today. a man called in who said he was a blind vietnam vet and that he had been refused treatment at the VA hospital. this poor guy broke down in tears while he was on the phone, really made me upset.

this country will spend billions and billions to help everyone BUT its own citizens. a damned illegal immigrant would have no trouble getting healthcare here, but someone who put his own ass on the line for his country? shouldnt he be priority number 1 ?

bush has no business even talking to vietnam, sad thing is, you just KNOW that they will get what they want from him. maybe they will ask for hanoi jane.

vietnam vets and all veterans, thank you for everything you do!

Didn't hear the radio talk show but I find it extremly difficuly to believe that a Nam veteran was refused treatment at a VA medical center unless there's a lot more to the story.

Sadly the war was a mistake. Communism will collapse of its own accord as happened in Russia and is happening in China- people will demand more rights- particularly as they get better educated and read material from other countries.

Best thing you can do to break down communism is sell them western goods.

well i dont think this guy was telling a lie, he was clearly getting emotional. it just about brought a tear to my eyes just listening to him.

9MM, never meant to say the guy was lying. Sorry if I gave that impression. I'm only speaking from experience. I'm a 100% disabled service connected combat wounded Viet Nam Veteran and have been associated with 3 VA hospitals since being released from Walter Reed Army Hospital after 18 months there. The only fault I've found with the VA is overcrowding due to under funding. You will find veterans who do not share my feelings. You will find veterans who did not get the quality of treatment they deserved because of substandard VA hospitals. You will also find a lot of "Wannabe" Nam Veterans out there. You just have to be able to seperate the wheat from the chaff.

The VA calender is pretty full, I am a 50% disabled OEF veteran and it took me from Oct of 2004 to June 2005 to get a followup appointment and get all my tests run.

The folks at the VA clinic are great its just the fact that there are so many vets now that you have guys returning from OIF and OEF adding to the numbers. there is a limit to what they can do in a day.

They have always been corteous and helpful to me.

The DOD doesnt post all the non combat injuty illnesses and disease injuries on its website....you may be talking close to 30,000 military folks that will need some kind of care from the VA for life and the number will keep increasing.

Some of the vets in my area may have a 6 month wait between mental health visits.

Its a shame that the Republicans in Congress took more than one vote to give some more money to the VA.....should have been a no brainer. Now the VA is having another shortfall and needs more cash.

What's a good charity that helps disabled / recovering veterans? I mean a really good one. I'm aware that in many major 'help the starving children' charities most of the money "dissapears" in a virtual Bermuda triangle of crooked coke-sniffing businessmen's pockets.

We talked to Germany and Japan after the war and they are now trading partners. Why shouldnt we talk to Vietnam? Cant hold a grudge your entire life. If we do go to war with China we will need places for navy ships to dock.
The surest way to win against the communists in North Vietnam is trade and relations with the Vietnamese people. I beleive that we should even remove the embargo from Cuba..give Castro one last thing to yell about... and start opening some ties up with the Cuban people.

It bugs me a little,,but lets face it, its time, withe the Chinese rapid growth in all the military ave's,we will need the Viet's to help of set them, they hate the Chinese more then us. And like the Capt' said the war is over time to drive on

Eghad,

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who believes unleashing the Almighty Greenback Dollar and western goods on Cuba will topple Castro's regime without firing a shot. Not sure about Vietnam, but I can't see why it wouldn't work there too.

God Bless you and I thank you... :)

You are morally straight, but I'm not so sure "talking" to them is the best thing. After all, we "talked" to the USSR and because we did, they lasted 77 years! Long after they would have failed economically on their own.
:o

I have my doubts as to whether or not the USSR really did collapse. It sure looks a lot like they just changed their masks and "went under". :(

We talked to Japan and Germany only AFTER we utterly laid waste and destroyed our enemies within their countries. We "talked" from a position of the victorious. :p

If the communist nations want our economic assistance... perhaps they should become a democratic republic FIRST.

Someone said earlier that our wealth goes more to the rest of the world than it does to our own needs.

Weel you can talk or just sit looking at each other........ The Navy needs some places to dock and resupply in the area.

There is one thing that undermines authoritarian regimes...that is the exchange of information with western nations. folks find out that they are not getting the straight poop about western life. One of the most recent things china has done is cut down on Internet access. Authoritarian regimes depend on closed societies to keep the real truth from coming in...

I took 77 years for communism to fall in Russia because we just sat across the way and pouted at each other. Russia then needed western technology to do certain things...that opened the door

so we can sit across the room and sulk or start opening doors..

I agree Russia is not a finished work....they went straight from communism to capitalism

If we start these nations on the road to capitalism....somewhere down the road the changeover will be easier.

I just can't believe that we do any trade with those traitors in the so-called "Confederate states". :p

Never let anything go!

The popular myth is that Vietnam "Won" the war.

Today they are the poorest nation in Asia by far. Their infrastructure still hasn't completely recovered. Hundreds of thousands of their soldiers will never be accounted for. Parts of their country are unusable.

A Phyrric victory if there ever was one.

We should establish relations with them, we need another country to provide cheap labor besides China!

BTW the other day I was in Gander Mountain looking at Camo, found some marked "Made in Vietnam".

I am trying to decide if that is an acceptable alternative to "Made in China"?

Time passes. Countries change. Wounds heal.

I admit a little queasiness over it, but to sulk moodily forever isn't really possible, IMO.
