vietnam 45's

The official sidearm .45 was the 1911A1. There were probably a few old examples of the 1911 still in issue at the time, too.

A lot of air crew carried .38 Special revolvers, ostensibly because they could use tracer ammo for signaling. All I ever saw were S&W, the M&P, model 10 and also the model 15 Combat Masterpiece.

There were also a number of special purpose, special issue handguns in use, but I don't think of any others in caliber .45.

Best,
RR

Rocky,

I carried a 1911A1 in 1968 (Vietnam) for 4 months as a M-60 gunner. Can't remember the manufacturer. 45 ammo was hard to get also most of the time I only had one mag. told the end carrying the 60's I had three mags. My personal opinion was the 45 was only good to use a chow gun. (every three days a hot meal was flown in and you had to take your weapon to get the hot chow). Handgun was easier to carry than a 16 or or a 60.

Turk--
Thank you for your service.

I'm very glad you only needed your sidearm for use as a chow gun and didn't need to deploy it in an anti personnel role. I'd guess you're just as happy to have had it work out that way, too.

The makers of the 1911A1's used in VN would have been the same as in WWII and Korea, no large purchases of 1911's were made after '45 or so due to the number in stock.

Colt, Ithaca, Remington Rand, US&S if 1911A1's. Remington UMC, Springfield, Colt if 1911's or those re-built into 1911A1's.

57,58 and 60,61,62 carried Remington Rands. 66,67 carried Colt 1911 with flat housing. Never an ammo shortage for em for us tho some of it was marked for subguns only and we were careful not to mix. Never did find out what the .45 subgun ammo had that was different, maby slower power or hotter ?
