In 1861, after Texas seceded from the union, and all the federal troops left the Texas frontier forts, Ben McCullough cut a deal with Sam Colt to ship 1,000 of the new Colt 1860 Army revolvers to Texas for frontier defense. 500 successfully made it past the union naval blockade and were used by Texas Rangers to patrol the frontier. Cimarron Firearms offers an accurate replica of these early McCollough 1860 Army Colts. We'll examine the history and features of this gun. Then we'll see what it can do on the range.

Nice shooting Mike!
I could tell that Mike's eyes and facial expression were doing the happy dance!
Sometime you will need to miss some really easy shots in order to compensate for making those tough shots look so easy! :D

That WAS my happy dance.

Didn't I look happy? :D

I held just under the 2x4 for the first shot, and I was really surprised when the bird broke, but, after that, the last four were really easy because I knew where to aim.

I thought it would be more difficult. If I'd known how easy it was going to be I wouldn't have built it up so much.

Mike, thank you for another GREAT video! That's a great looking revolver. The faux patina has never appealed to be either...until I saw that gun.:D

The "bad guy's view" is a great highlight to your videos!

Nipple Update Question

Mike, thank you for the update video and the great information on the new stainless nipples.

I have a Pietta Remington New Army, Uberti Dragoon and Uberti 1860 that I'd like to buy replacement nipples. I'd like to replace them all with the same type, but am not sure which to use. I had been thinking of Treso, but am open to suggestions. I have a bunch of #11 caps, so I'd like to use a nipple that will fit the #11 caps.

Thanks for the advice!

Be advised that '#11' caps is just a relative size. There is difference between manufacturers. Remington # 10 works with all my nipples (Treso, Pietta, Ruger, etc.) HTH.

Hi Zullo,

Usually I use Remington #10s. However, manufacturer of the aftermarket nipples I used in this video specifically recommend CCI #11 nipples.

After the problems in this video, I ran a detailed test using CCI #10, CCI #11, Remington #10 and Remington #11 on those nipples (Company to remain nameless)

CCI #10s won't even go on..too small.

Remington #10 and #11 are a bit loose...no misfires after 20 rounds fired, but caps jams occurred from fired caps falling under the hammer.

CCI #11 fit the best. No cap jams, but I had my first failure to pop a cap on round 14, and it went down hill from there.

I am certain that the nipples/caps are such an exact fit that fouling is keeping the caps from fully seating.

I have discussed this in great detail with the company and I recommended tests they should perform. I think as little as a 1/10,000th smaller cone may cure the problem. They are going to work on it.

In the mean time, Slix-Shot nipples cured the problem. I have another post on the board on that.

While these Uberti replicas look fine I have a question regarding the original McCullough Colt 1860s. Would one of you pards or pardettes be able to share a picture of the real thing, please?
I wonder if these Colts from 1861 were really 4 screw frames and not 3 screw frames, and if they would not have the round recoil shields without notches.
Thanks for enlightening me.
