Seems like a great way to run a tac light on a standard 4 shot tube. Thoughts?

Interesting setup. Do you use your thumb to activate the light while keeping your fingers around the vertical grip?
No this isn't mine but it seems like it would solve the problem of one's hand slamming into the light under recoil! I've personally had this happen on my 870 Police.

On where and what?
A vertical fore grip does give a bit more control. If you're hand is whacking the daft flashlight under recoil, the flashlight in in the wrong place.

Personally, I only think a vertical grip is good on bullpup shotguns... namely the KSG.

For a traditional pump action, I’d go with the regular pump forend or a handstop. When you get into shorter barrels, I opt more for the handstop.

I haven't used a VFG on a shotgun, so take my comments with a grain of salt; but one of the problems I ran into with ARs is that if you have your hand only on the VFG, that is a lot of weight rolling around on top of your fist and it makes recoil control (sights go straight up and straight down under recoil) difficult.

That arrangement puts 4-5 12ga shells in a tube above your fist, the bore even higher over the VFG, and considerably more recoil. So my first instinct would be that it works poorly for accurate, quick follow-up shots; but I could be wrong.

what does the fore grip accomplish? Also, why the side receiver mount for the optic? seems like added bulk.
