Vertical grip $ or $$$

Ok. I forgot one thing for my ar build- vertical grip. I see 'em for $20-$100.

Why buy a more expensive one?

I don't want the angled grip. Just didn't feel right.

It depends. Some people treat AR's like people treat cars. Bolt on accessories are always popular in man-hobbies. Thus the "low-end" and "high-end" parts.
I personally like the magpul AFG.

Magpul afg- It felt like I couldn't hold a good grip. I grabbed the standard vertical and did well. Are there different sizes or just need to get used to?

I never will understand the controlled feed mouser enthusiest, I have loved my A-bolt and my next bolt action will be an X-bolt.

Hmm, interesting take on that...

As for vertical grips, it's about what feels comfortable to you. You can find a used KAC vertical grip for $5-10 on most boards. They're about $20 new. It's standard issue for the US military, and it's plenty fine for most any use.

Then you get into the Magpul one, which is about $25, and is shaped to fit the palm a bit better. All sorts of other options up to the TangoDown grip, which runs about $80, I think. Comes with locking levers or a quick detach throw lever. Those have storage inside them, for something like earplugs or an extra bolt.

There are many different sizes, and weights. I have one that pops open to be a bi-pod. Longer than most, it also weighs more than most. Around 2 pounds. Added to the front of the rifle, feels more like 10 pounds. But handy while laying under a pine tree waiting for a yote or deer to wander through. Push a button and slide it off before walking/stalking. Cost for a quality one $140.00, cost of the knock off $40.00

Thanks for the info guys.

And that bipod out of the grip seems pretty useful; I assume it's not flimsy for the money.

I'll probably just buy an inexpensive vertical for now. I've just spent more than I intended- of course I bought a 442 for ccw since it was $50 off regular price on a whim.

I have a few different ones, all of them are actual quality and not knockoffs.

Grip Pod- the original VFG/bipod. The real ones don't weigh a couple pounds but will hold up. If you have a rifle that going to split the difference between quick handling and longer range, it's worth a look.

TangoDown stubby QR- Good if you're using it mostly as a hand stop. Attaches quickly, is decent. IMO, it's just fine, but not ideal.

LaRue FUG- three different end caps let you adjust the size, I prefer this QR release to the TD one, and just feels grippier. Not cheap by any means, but IMO, you get what you pay for.

If you want nothing more than a VFG, then go for the Magpul VFG and save your money. If you want something that feels great and is high quality, go with the LaRue.

I bought a grip-pod on ebay for my ruger for less than $40. Its been used but still looks and works good. I love shooting off the bench with it.

I have a $20, Magpul MVG but you need the MOE or ACR handguard to use it. I also have the cheap Promag and the more expensive Troy Battle Grip...funny thing they all work the same. :D

Yeah, the cheap and the expensive VFGs won't have much difference in how they work. They're a handle or a hand stop; no more, no less. It isn't a stressed part, it isn't involved with accuracy. It seems to me that the price variations mainly are concerned with weight, the attachment system (a quick release mount costs more than one that isn't), and just the general feel (hard plastic is cheap, a softer more rubbery texture costs more). Plugs that turn the hollow VFG into a storage spot also increase cost.

If you're getting into VFGs that do other things (like the Grip Pod), then you are introducing other parts where quality may be more of an issue.

I agree completely oppositely. Its exactly not like why my smif & wethon 15-4 rolls the cylinder counter-clockwise. My next wheel gun will rotate clockwise.
But what do either of our conundrums have to do with VFG's?

:D

As for the vfg, I'd say it's just like anything else. Try to fondle as many as you can and see which one feels best to you. Go with that one since it'll be your meat hook grabbing on to it.

I own two different types. There is a Mako, folding,a little lower price, about $40.The other is the push button folding YHM.
I understand they have value close quartersrapid fire.I don't do that much.Folded, both offhand and sitting,I use it like the old palm rest.I get a better position, stacking my bones.
folded down, prone,I put my fist on the ground and hold it as a monopod, sort of a modified Hawkins position. That gives me good enough prairie dog accuracy I have not been attaching a bipod.
