Verry Serious Question

What is the best 12 gauge double barrel, side by side, 16" coach shot gun. With external Manual hammers of course.

Preferably under $400

I use an Interstate Arms Model 99 that fits your bill. The only negative is the redundant crossbolt safety. It can be modified to minimize accidental, which I suggest only because it's already got a perfectly functional tang safety. Surprisingly decent fit and finish for a chicom import.
 
18" is the shortest you're going to be able to go without having to go into stupid federal laws, and most coach guns ive seen are 20" btw. Unless you get something vintage that was grandfathered in at 16". But it wont be $400 ;)
 
You can maybe find an old used Husqvarna hammer gun for less than $250.

And a hacksaw for $10-20 down at your Ace or Tru-Value hardware store.

Occasionally you'll find one of those Russian or Chinese hammerguns for less than $400. Some though have hammers that are used for show or cocking, but dont actually function for striking a firing pin.
 
You'll want to change your specification for barrel length to 18" minimum, unless you want to either pay an extra $200 to license a SBS (short barreled shotgun)- if you can even do that in CO, I don't know your state/local laws.

Meanwhile, take a look at the CZ offering, and look around at reviews on line. There are a number of new coach guns available these days due to the popularity of CAS (cowboy action shooting).

Does'nt anybody (besides me) use that coach gun from Century. The one that is half Turkish and half Chinese? The barrel is chinese and the wood is turkish. I've only put about 100 rds through it so far and had no problems! The only thing that I didn't like is that it has a manuel saftey which I will probly not use. Other than that it been good. External hammers/no ejector 20 inch bbl. It was under $200. :D
 
Hmmm... some interesting options... I guess I hadn't realized that the minimum legal barrel length is 18" for a shotgun ... I figured it was 16" like rifles....

Any more suggestions?

I would say it depends on what you will use the shotgun for. If you are getting it for Cowboy Action Shooting (exposed hammers required only for Classic Cowboy category) don't buy one with any safeties on it. In that game the only safe position is leaving the action open. Hammers down on loaded rounds in barrel is not safe if accidently dropped. My SXS with exposed hammers is an 1878 Model from TTN. It has worked very well and has no safeties.

The TTN imported 1878 coach is a high quality shotgun for the price. It's nice looking also.

TTN, Cimarron, EMF Co & Taylor CO all the same shotgun.

The one I bought from SOG is imported by CAI and made by Jing of China. 12 guage sxs, coach gun with exposed hammers, advertised as NO safety. When it came it had a safety and rebounding hammers, which means that it won't fire till I pull either trigger.The hammer only comes within about a 1/4in of hitting the firing pin when at rest, and will not move any more till the trigger is pulled. I have absolutly no problem with loaded chambers and the hammers down.:D
