VEPR II accuracy report - how does this AK rate?

I finally got a chance to test my VEPR II in 7.62x39 today at 25, 50, and 100 yds with Wolf 122 gr. FMJ. All groups were with iron sights. Here's what I got:

- 100 yds: 7 shot group @ 3.5"
- 50 yds: 6 shot group @ 2"
- 25 yds: 8 shot group @ 1.25"

I think I could have gotten better numbers, especially at 100 yds, but I was using one of those Remington targets with the orange squares and could hardly make out the border with the sun over my shoulder. How does this compare to other AKs? Given this accuracy, what could I expect with a variable scope?

I was getting like half those numbers with my VEPR II .223, but I was using South African NATO ammo, not Wolf. I think that ammo is why your numbers are such as they are. I have never liked Wolf ammo. That's just my opinion.....

ROCK-n-GLOCK,

Could it be the difference in caliber? The .223 is inherently more accurate than the 7.62x39, notwithstanding the ammo.

sounds like a battle rifle, softball group at a 100 is in spec for military ammo

try some match 7.39

Rock,

I'm sure the cal could have something to do with it as well as the barrel on the .223 VEPR II is a semi bull. Haven't seen the 7.62x39 barrel. My main point is that Wolf ammo. I just don't like it and never had good luck with it. I know of lotta guys who do use it and like it alot(mainly cause it's cheap).

I bet if you were to try some better ammo, your groups would close up. On my SLR-95, I get about a solid 2-3 using the South African ammo. I first bought it in 7.62x39 and had such good luck with it, I starting buying it in .223 also. It is pretty clean and relatively new production(90's). The brass looks like it just came outta of the factory. Shoots consistent. For surplus, it is pretty good stuff.....

lol, you guys often use MOA as too much of an idicator. The important thing is how good are HIS groups compared to HIS groups with other guns....

Dangus,

Good point. I only get about 3" groups with my BM AR-15 with open sights at 100 yards. With a fixed 5x scope, I get 1.25" groups.

BTW, I have better than 20/20 eyesight and excellent trigger control when firing these rifles. I can barely see a 3" target at 100 yards, much less distinguish its features. At this distance, the top of the post is bigger than the target and any IMPERCEPTIBLE movement on my part will throw a bullet off a good 1" or so. Plus, when the target is a dot, I can't tell with absolute certainty that I am placing it on the same point, so I might think its on the same spot when in fact its off by an inch or so (with a scope, obviously your sight picture is much better). Given this, I don't see how people can claim they can place the post in the exact same spot consistently, shot after shot. Maybe it can be done, but, again, I have REALLY good eyesight and the rifle is not moving at all, so if I can't do it, I have my doubts about other people doing it until I witness it myself. Hence, I would be in doubt of anyone claiming better than 3 MOA with open sights at 100 yds using an AK.
