I know very few TFLers have owned or fired either of these rifles, but they look good to me.
The VEPR II .308 retails, according to the Robinson Armament website, for less than $600. You're not going to get a good FAL (custom or DS Arms parts gun) for anywhere near that price, and you can forget about an M1A, AR-10, or DS Arms FAL for less than one grand.
Then there's the Super VEPR, which retails for about $800. I really like the looks of this rifle, but for the same money, I could get a DS Arms STG-58 parts gun FAL, and with the FAL, you get 20 round magazines for quite a bit less than a single 10 round VEPR magazine.
VEPR II .308
Super VEPR .308
On the other hand, who cares? If you can't kill something with ten rounds of .308, you ought to be running from it, not shooting at it. I don't plan on getting in any close range firefights against multiple opponents (where a higher capacity magazine has true utility) and even if I did, I know how to do a quick reload. And 10 rounds is plenty for a battle rifle. (see M1 Garand) But I digress.
I'm wondering if I should get a VEPR II .308 or the Super VEPR, if I decide on this rifle. The VEPR II is cheaper, but the Super VEPR looks better (IMHO), has an integral scope rail, and the VEPR II doesn't appear to have a rear sling swivel stud, can anyone verify? Oh, what kind of iron sights does the Super VEPR have?
Oh, one last thing. I'm sure that a bunch of folks are going to tell me to forget about the VEPR and get a FAL or M1A instead. To those, I'll say this. I'm still deciding here, and I want to know about the VEPR. I already know about the FAL and M1A. I'm contemplating the FAL and have ruled out the M1A, so, thanks anyway.
