VEPR II .223

Any of you guys own one of the new VEPR II's in .223? Are they free of the performance issues of the other .223 AKs I've heard about (fails to feed, accuracy problems, etc...)? What kind of accuracy can you get out of the things? And finally, what mags to they take exactly? All the ads I've seen just say "high-cap mags" but fail to specify which kind. I suspect the SAR-3 .223 mags, but I would like to know for sure. Seems like they might make a good "poor-man's Galil" at the prices I've seen.

I have one. We have only fired approximately 75 rounds thru it-so accuracy is still uncertain, but seems good.It is hard to say at 49 years old, shooting 50 yards with iron sights. The fit and finish are EXCELLENT,as is the cycling. It is built very well, and we have had no failures to fire.Ours needs a scope.IT IS HEAVY-9LBS!!!

Thanks

I appreciate the info, Tracer. Lemme know what the accuracy is like after you scope that sucker ;-) But could you tell what mags it uses, though? I've been wondering about that for a while now...

It uses a specially modified 17(?) round mag Robinson has tailored for this gun, only available thru Robinson.

Thanks Tracer!

You've been a big help, I appreciate the info. Those 17rd mags sound suspicious though. The Robinson Armaments site does say 30-shot. Sounds like a marketing "error", huh? Lemme bug you with one last question - Do those holes in the side of the receiver affect reliability at all? I just noticed those on a pic, but they say it's an actual RPK receiver, so logically a real RPK has them as well, right?

I believe 30 round mags are available,at extra cost. No,the holes don't affect reliability.I have been told this is actually a RPK machine gun receiver, thus the weight.I paid $469 + $25 FFL fee.Having owned 4 AR's,I would say there is little risk at that price.

I believe that 30-round mags are modified AK-74 (5.54x39mm) mags.

Robinson guarantees flawless functioning of the VEPR II in .223 with its own modified mags, which are more expensive than normal AK-74 mags, but heck of a lot cheaper than most "high-cap" rifle mags.

At AK-47.net, the VEPR II series had many fans and supporters. I'm getting one as soon as I move and settle down in the next city.
