Can anyone tell me what velocity I can expect from a 24 inch Marlin Cowboy chambered in 45 Long Colt?? Standard cartridges and or the 45 Colt "magnum" loaded by Corbon??? I am hoping to hunt close range deer with it this fall. Thanks for any information.
stub, if you handload, read on: Years ago, Dean Grenell made some experiments with slow burning powders and the 45 ACP, and his results using AA9 were interesting. Velocities in the neighbourhood of 1100fps from a 1911, and low pressure. From a thompson semiauto, the difference between factory stuff and his handloads were very noticeable. You could, cautiously, transplant this to 45 colt. Work up loads with propellants like 2400 and 4227, that would give you velocities in the 1600fps class, with 250gr. bullets. For starting loads, see Lyman manual - loads for contender. good hunting.
Thanks for the information and referral to the sixgunner site. It answered all of my questions and concerns as to whether the 45 Colt in the 1894 Cowboy was suitable for deer hunting. IT IS!
