velocity drops with powder increase

trying to figure out if I messed up some how. tested a batch of loads today and had velocity decreases with increased charge weights before going up again. 30-06, varget, remington 9 1/2 primers speer 150g gold dots loaded to 0.011 off the lands. Had primers starting to flatten with the last 2, rest looked normal. fired 5 round groups.

Well...The only load data I got for Varget in a 30-06 with a 150gr jacketed bullet shows:

51.0 Grains as max with a tested pressure of 50,100 CUP
at an average velocity of 2,975 fps from a 24" test barrel.

hornady lists all bullet weights and types together. 150-155g. they list 53.6g as max at between 2900-2949fps. they don't list pressure

Might be a sign you are at the top of the load. Nice wide node down at 51.5 and 52.0 to play with if you don't mind losing a few FPS. What are the SD's and ES's

long range, short range, target or hunting round

was hoping to get a littler higher up. think i am going to re-test next time i go out. 5rnd groups
51.5 sd 13, es 28
52.0 sd 8 , es 19
52.5 sd 20, es 58
52.0 sd 18, es 47
53.5 sd 13, es 31

As a target guy I would definitely explore that 51.5 - 52.0 range. For hunting you still have over 800 ft lbs of energy at 600 yards, the higher node would stretch the kill range out to 700

Shoot at least 5 shots per charge weight. You're gonna get ten times more meaningful data.

Nobody shoots 1 shot groups to measure accuracy.

its actually a bit better than that. the Gold dot has a fantastic .503 G1 BC, in the 51.5 to 52.0 at 2916 muzzle it should retain 816ft lb at 850yds. , the higher 53.0-53.5 would only gain me 50yds, stretching it to 900yds. I will definitely explore 51.5-52.0
