VCI vs live ammo?

:):):)My question is does using VCI type rust inhibitors have any long term effect on live ammunition? I keep one loaded firearm and I have been using vci type products to prevent rust for a long time now and it works very well. I live next to the ocean where rust is always a concern. But I begain to wonder what about the ammo in the one loaded gun what if the chemicals in the vci affected the primer material I could end up with a dud and coming up with a gun full of duds could make one become, well, buzzard bait. Does any one know? I have seen nothing writen about this subject.

Lots of experiments have been done both with live ammo and with primers alone to see what might neutralize them? Turns out to be quite difficult to do anything to a loaded round. The metal fit is close enough to form a pretty effective seal. The bare primers don't get hurt that readily either. Some folks have soaked them various oils and solvents for several days to no effect.

If you are really worried, you can buy yourself some primer sealant and apply it to the new ammo. I don't think you'll need it unless you plan to take the ammunition scuba diving with you, repeatedly.
