Stossel eyes Oprah's shoes

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - It appears that ABC's search for a replacement for Oprah Winfrey is finally over.

ABC News reporter and 20/20 staple John Stossel has been tapped as the heir apparent to the queen of talk. He is slated to get his own one-hour news-oriented syndicated format as early as fall 2001.

``Oprah'' producer King World's contract with the ABC-owned stations expires at the same time, and Stossel's show will likely fill the void left behind when the daytime diva's show moves to the CBS station group. King World was recently bought by CBS Corp.

Winfrey has also publicly considered retiring from the syndication game to move onto other projects. King World executives had no comment.

I'm concerned about how a daily show will affect John Stossel. He is one of the few "news" reporters I respect.

Up to now, his reports have been highly researched and well thought out. I'm worried that the daily strain to get a show aired will cause him to cut back on research and rush shows to air before they've been reviewed sufficiently.

If there is any movement, in any way, towards an Oprah or Spring type show, it will be a great loss.

Probable John Stossel shows:

Day 1: Campaign Finance Reform - How does the Constitution affect it and does America really need it?

Day 45: The new drug of abuse - "I was hooked on Viagra!"

Day 100: Boobs! See big ones!

And Mr. K scores a hat trick! ;)

I'm gonna make it to 20 posts even if it kills me!!!

When I tried to delete and then edit the double tap, I got a third. Ain't computers great?

I'd love to see Stossel get a show of his own - IMHO, he is one of the most respectable news people in TV. OTOH, I just can't see him on daytime TV - but, he'd be a great replacement for Maher's 'Politically Correct' ('error' intentional ...).
