I have been seeing the Vari-X II's (3-9x40) in the really low 2's ($220 or so) these days and was wondering if anyone really knows the difference between the Vari-X II family and the Vari-X III family.

Thanks,
Saands

The Vari-X II line is the one which Leupold is closing out. There is a marked difference between the Vari-X II and Vari-X III lines of Leupold scopes. The III's are brighter, have better optics and have a more "modern" technology in regard to the way they are manufactured. That said, the Vari-X II line were/are exellent scopes, especially for hunting and plinking. I have two of them on two of my rifles and they work great. They also, like any Leupold scope, carry the Leupold lifetime warranty. The low $200 range is a good price. I think Natchez has the lowest price I've seen yet at $209.

The Vari-x II does not have click type adjustments. The Vari-x III does. I had not heard that the Vari-x II was being closed out. Could be true. I have used several of the Vari-x II scopes and still own a couple. They are good units, but the Vari-x III is better. Watch-Six

Y'see, it all began with the Zeiss Conquest. A $400 3-9 from them is aimed squarely at Leupold's Vari-X III. Leupold didn't get where they are by taking challenges like this lying down, so obviously some changes have to be made.

Burris, of course, considers Leupold's movements dangerous to them, so they've got some changes of their own to make. This is about how WWI got started, isn't it?

To get back to the original question, what you pay for in glass is coatings. Knobs are nice, glass can be made better, but the money goes to coatings.

Another difference between the two is that the Vari-X III has a primitive rangefinding device built into it. You just bracket the deer from brisket to shoulder using the crosshairs and the apex of the duplex. Adjust the power to bracket the deer. Then you read the range on the power ring.

You can avoid twisting knobs by remembering that if you can count the buck's points with your nekkid eyebone, he's inside of 300 yards--so point it and pull. :D

Aww come on! :D I never said I used the rangefinding doohickey...just that its on there! lol All my shots on deer have been inside 125 yards so far...
