Vaquero modifications - gunsmith or homebrew?

hey all,

I have a vaquero and finally decided that i can't live with it behaving differently from my other single actions.

I like the transfer bar, but i need the halfcock loading action.
the kit from www.powercustom.com called 'Ruger Single Action hammer and trigger kit' seems to be what i'm looking for.

So, the question is should i attempt this myself or have a gunsmith do it?
Anyone who has tried this kit have a say?

(also the free-spin pawl seems interesting but that kit says 'gunsmith fitting required')
thanks!

First ask yourself if you can do minor fitting and do you have the tools plus the ability to use them. If not then take it to your gunsmith.
If unsure of your abilities and knowledge then it's cheaper to let a pro handle the job then to have him correct any mistakes or slip ups.

Ruger Vaqueros of 1st generation form are simple and easy to work on at home. Ron Power designed his parts to be fitted at home by novices. Is it as simple as changing a light bulb? No. If you can tell a monkee wrench from a monkey, you are qualified to work on Ruger Vaqueros. LOL There are multiple how-tos on the net. Check www.sixgunner.com Wolff, Lees and others like www.powercustom.com show the parts and are glad to help you order what is needed. Instructions and online tutorials as well as DVDs and books are available. If you can gauge/gap a spark plug with a gap/gauge tool, you can probably fit most aftermarket parts. Spend some money and time researching and reading or viewing first. If your idea of hands on is calling a professional and looking at your watch as they work, you will be ahead by taking your business to a gunsmith. It isn't rocket science but, it is slightly more involved than turning the key.

Also inquire of: Bob James at www.gunfighter.com - originally built his considerable rep on Colt SAAs and its clones but knows his Vaqueros very well- can't speak for the above kit and how he feels about it, but otherwise will do a complete basic (or extensive) Vaquero tune package for a reasonable price....and Gary Reeder at www.reedercustomguns.com one of top Vaquero smiths in country... both of Arizona.

Thanks for all of the replies!

I think i'll take it into a smith for the work.

Gak, thanks for the info!
Since i'm in AZ i'll be able to drop it off at either of those places.
