value question on 1911A1

Do you mean a Series 70 Colt Government Model? AFAIK, they did not have all numeric serials as you seem to indicate. Their serial numbers all had either prefixes ("SM","70G", "70S", "70L") or suffixes ("G70", "B70").

A 100% Series 70 would be worth around $700-800. NIB with the papers, a bit more.

Maybe he's talking about the newly-reintroduced guns with the 71B prefix. Thye are simply worth whatever a new one costs. Being a sub-100 serial number means nothing, although I do know a few folks were hoping to get serial #45 (71B00045).

A firearm doesn't become collectible until they stop making them. And even then it will take awhile as supply dries up and demand increases. It's not an overnight process. Heck, even Singer M1911A1's were not considered anything special until the last decade or so.
