Value of Springfield Shotgun???

My friend has asked to me to see if I could find out what the value of the shotgun his Grandfather had given him some years ago.

On the receiver it has Springfield Arms Company, Chicopee Falls, Mass. USA

On the removable front stock it has B 3 87 carved into the wood and it is also stamped on the lock-up mechanism.

On the barrel and inside the receiver it has the # 78409 stamped on them. The barrel also has W.A.P.T. and BARREL AND LUG FORGED IN ONE PIECE stamped on it.

It is a single shot and this is about all of the information I have on it. If anyone can shed some light on the possible value of this shotgun, I would GREATLY appreciate it

Can you provide a little more description:

Exposed Hammer?
Side Plates?
Gauge?
Legnght of BBL
Crescent Butt Stock?
Break Open?
T-Guard used to open?
Thin Wrist?
etc etc

Anything that you may notice on the gun that would help identify it.

It has an exposed hammer and is a break open. I would venture to say that it has a 26" or 28" barrel, this is from just one look at it. The buttstock is shorter than today's shotguns. This is really about all that I can tell you. It's not a real fancy piece of work, just a regular ole single shot 12 gauge.

Near as I can figure is must be an 1881 Springfield Single Shot Shotgun. I could only find one Springfield Sngl Shot made by them. If So:

The value would be EXC=$1,750.00 to POOR=$700.00
