All,

I am looking to sell my S&W 66-3 .357 mag in excellent condition with custom wood grips and 3" barrel but not really sure what its worth. It has the number 258 near the cylinder. Ive heard anywhere from 700-1000 bucks. If any of you guys can help me out with the value I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Sir, if your M-66 is truly a 3" it should command a premium price. The last one I saw for sale, about a year ago, went for $1,250.00 in less than an hour.

If it's a more common 2 1/2" barrel pricing should run anywhere between $500.00 on the low end and $750.00 on the high end.

old bear, thanks for the info, i believe it is a 3" because the guy who sold it to me told me it was a 3" what is the proper way to measure the barrel? Is the measurement done from the muzzle to the point where the cylinder locks up with the barrel? Thank you for your help

I'm not sure how rare the 3" barrel is in the 66-3 model / the S&W book says in 1988 ( in the dash 3 series ) ... they made "special 3" full lug version with full length extractor rod"....

In my area all of the 2 1/2" versions are demanding prices around $ 750 -
$ 800 if they're clean. All of the 2 1/2" were round butt frames ( and not everyone likes how the round butt fits their hands ...vs the square butt frames on the 4" and 6" barrels.../ and while I don't know if yours is a round butt or square butt...my hunch is its a round butt...and again, if its real clean - no handling marks or holster wear to speak of, timing is solid, etc...then a 3" might demand a little premium over the 2 1/2". And the 2 1/2" guns seem to be selling really well for the last yr or so.

For perspective --- In my area ..the 4" versions of the model 66 ( dash 3's and 4's ) are selling for around $ 700 - $ 750...and the no dash or dash 1 series ...where the barrels were pinned and cylinders were recessed were demanding a little higher prices ( $ 750 - $ 800 ).

What fits the shooter the best....round butt in the 2 1/2"( or your 3") ...vs square butt in the 4"..affects what the shooter buys / or they may have to do something to adapt the grips on the round butt to enlarge them a little if they favor the feel of the square butt.../ but we seem to have more buyers that have not really figured out the difference - or what they really like....
