Value of SKS?

OK, I tried to wait on the search function to come back, but apparently its still giving Rich a hard time. (You cant trust anything more mechanical than knife and fork!)

Anyway, I got an SKS rifle from a man as a tip for some work I did for him. (The Lord hath given me an SKS!). It is a Norinco, in a Choate folding stock with an aftermarket 30 rounder installed, no factory mag, Bayonette is there, as is a reverse thread cleaning rod (WTF??). What is it worth? How do I tell if its legal (?) to be in the folding stock? I've heard that the imports of these rifles were stopped awhile back so if its in the states at all, it must be pre-ban and folding stock legal...

I put 40 rounds thru it without a hitch, and the accuracy amazed me inside 100 yds, I expected much less.

THX.

Chances are unless all that stuff was on the rifle before 1989 its not legal. Putting a folding stock on an weapon banned from import using more than 10 imported parts is illegal. Even with a detach thats illegal under the same law. So the assualt rifle ban really applies to more domestic stuff. Because they had banned certain rifles to be imported a certian way in 89.

SKS's are standard with 10 rounders and bayonettes. So the only aftermarket add ons are a pistol gripped folding stock and the 30 round mag. It has "sporter" stamped in the receiver, do you think that identifies it as a post 89 rifle? I figured it was in the $200 range.

Value of an SKS

Here's a page SKS shooters should bookmark:

www.net1plus.com/users/oscar/sksmanual/sksmanual.html

There's a section in there on how to identify where
and when SKS's were made, as well as how
to strip and clean them. I have a pre-ban folding
stock chinese as well as a 1954 russian. The russian
is a quality made gun as far as military guns go, and is
in excellent condition.
The chinese gun is one I strap to the 4-wheeler or
dune buggy as a "beater" and can take amazing
amounts of abuse, rain, and dirt and still shoot straight.
The russian is a piece of history but I still shoot
it occasionally - it sometimes goes full auto on me
for four or five rounds, which makes it kinda interesting
to shoot.
