Value of Rem PSS 223 and twist?????

A buddy of mine has a PSS in 223 that he says was test fired only...Good guy and i have no reason to doubt it....Wants 600 for rifle and rings....By the way what would the twist be on one of those...Thanks for the help...Dick

How old is the rifle? The older models had a twist rate of 1 in 14" which was found not to work very well and then it was changed to 1 in 9". If it's a 1 in 9" and in good shape then $600 isn't bad but on the high side. Maybe about $525 would be about right.

thanks Rob01;;if this gun isn't a 1X9 i doubt i'd be interested since long range 223 almost certainly needs heavy bullets...i really wish it were a 1X7. Any body else have any thoughts on these...Thanks in advance...Dick

PSS .223.........

DICK, all .223 PSS's are 1-9 twist.
All other Rem' models .223, are 1-12........
And new a PSS, in .223 runs around $659.00 plus.......
If it's got MK4 rings, and base it's a steal if you want a .223.
If not, you would still be saving around 150.00.........
On the rifle alone......

MK4 rings

dick, you can tell by the way they attach.......they will hae 1/2' nuts on the sides, and will not come off.
Also, they are built like a tank, compared to the regular rings.

Tshoes, I hate to disagree with you, even though we have in the past, but I know the older PSS's in .223 when they came out weren't 1 in 9". I thought they were 1 in 14" but 1 in 12" might be right. I do know they weren't 1 in 9" because that was a change that I remember Remington making because of complaints about the slower twist and accuracy.

I agree with you that if it has the Mark 4 rings and base that $600 is a good price but if not it's a little high if a new one runs at only $59 more. If it's the gun alone I would offer a max of $525 but that's just me. Personally if he won't budge off $600 then I'd buy new because then you know where the gun has been and how many rounds have been down it.

We usually agree more than disagree......
You may be right,ALL the recent PSS's are 1-9......how's that?..:D
dick, said the rifle had just been "test", fired, so i assume it is a newer model.
As for the older .223's, all i remember is 1-12....
1-14, wouuld cause the rifle to be like the original AR15's used in PRVN, great wounding twist, horrible accuracy...causes the bullets to yaw, and not be stable.

I'll agree that we agree more than disagree ;)

Definately the newers have the 1 in 9" but I just wanted him to be aware. Who knows when the fellow he's buying from got the gun and who had it before him and for how long. Some dealers can have rifles on the shelves for years as you know. Especially a specialty rifle like that being sold at a mostly hunters gun shop would sit there for years. Who knows though and I was just trying to cover all the bases to cover his butt. We have to look out for each other you know :)
