Need help please. My uncle has a a Colt that has a 7.5" barrel no rust or pitting, wood grips, no finish. He say's it looks like bare steel. It came with what he describes as an OD green metal box that slides together. Inside is a letter on US Coast Guard letter head that say's something like "here is a good example of a Colt for your collection" It was addressed to a Lee St. Claire and signed by C.H. Gardiner . My Uncle says he remembers his Grandfather told him it was in the family before Oklahoma was a state. As you can tell from the above I have never seen the pistol just a description my Uncle gave me. Thank you.

Need to do some checking there.
SAA 9523 was made in 1874, the first full year of production of both the SAA and the '73 Winchester .44. I don't think Colt picked up the .44 that quick, but I can't find the actual year. I would expect it to be a .45.

I have a Frontier Six Shooter in .44-40, and I think that model was introduced in 1876; don't know that there were calibers other than .45 before that.
