Value of a Colt Detective Special?

I need some help. My boss told me he has a 15 year old Detective Special that has never been fired and is in its original box with papers. Some guy bought it and put it in his desk and it set there for 15 years. His widow gave it to my boss. He doesn't want to fire it because it might have collector value and thinks he will hold on to it and pass it on to his boys. He said it came with a holster that says detective or something on the back but couldn't remember if it said Colt on it.

I told him it might be worth a few hundred $ but wouldn't put him on easy street. I would appreciate it if someone could give me a suggestion of value. The finish is probably blue and it has a 2" barrel.

Don't know if this is going to be of any help,but last fall I picked up a Colt DSII in
good condition,Shows a little holster wear on front of barrel. No box or papers,no holster. I paid $190. for it. Just recently and this is a different gun. I bought a new in the box with papers S&W Md#36 for $250. and that one was nickle plated.
Now checking the Blue Book of Gun Values a 2"
barrel is suppose to be scarce. They are giving a top end figure of $395. If this gun was new 15yrs. ago that should make it a 3rd. issue made between 1973-1983.

Greg; My 1995 Blue Book Of Gun Values says 100% cond-$375, 98% cond-$325, 95% cond-$275. It's the 3 inch barrel that's considered scarce. Add $50 if nickel plated. I'm not so sure a Detective Special (third issue) has much collector value. But 20 or 30 years from now ya never know. Good Luck, J. Parker
 
Thanks, guys. I'll tell him it currently may be worth between $375 and $395. What with Colt about out of business and the way the prices of Colt pistols have gone up lately, in 20 years it could be worth quite a bit more. Even then I don't see it being a big part of his retirement portfolio. ;)
