value of a 25-2?

I'm looking at a 25-2 that has some miles on it. It's not beat down and worn out but there is some finish wear on the muzzle. It still seems to lock up tight.
I think it's an 80s production gun with the 6.5" barrel, target hammer/trigger/grips/sights.

What would a fair street price be on something like that? I know it's hard to be exact without having it in your hands but I'm new to the S&W N frame.

I would say, depending on the seller's need to move it, anywhere between $600 and $800. Check gunbroker for completed auctions.

I think $800 is a bit high ($600 is fair) although these do not surface very often. These are 45 acp where as 25-5s are 45 colt. IMO $500 to $700 for a gun with light holster wear / no box. Of course you will see them for $800 or more maybe, but do they SELL for that is the bigger question.

When you say "target sights", you probably actually mean a ramp (aka baughman) front (perhaps with insert?) and an adjustable rear, probably white outline? However, "target" sights are a patridge front with an adjustable rear, like a model 27 commonly has. I never saw a model marked 25 with a patridge / target blade.

A 25-2 would likely be 70s production esp because the 6.5 in barrel was discontinued in 1979 for the N frame. I think the 25-2 was even discontinued in the 1970s although I do not have my book in front of me.

From the 2010 Standard Catalog of Firearms,,,

Model 25 (.45 Target Model of 1950)
Prior to the model designation change in 1957 this model was
also known as the .45 Target Model of 1955, this was an improved
version of the 1950 Target .45. The Model 25 features a
heavier barrel 4", 6.5", or 8" in length with blued or nickel-plated
finish. All target options were offered. The Model 25 is chambered
for the .45 ACP or .45 Auto-rim cartridges. This model was
later chambered for .45 Colt as the Model 25-5.

The book also stated his gun is a "Sleeper",,,
Meaning: This symbol denotes “Sleepers” with rapidly-rising values and/or significant collector potential.

Hope this helps,,,

My original post said 500-700, but I immediately checked gunbroker, and the ones that sell are going for 600-800 (obviously, better condition higher the price), so I edited it. Those are sellng prices not asking prices.

Mint and/or with box are going for higher (700-900). I walked away from a minty pre-25 about five months ago as I had jut bought a model 27 two stalls away and didn't have the cash. :(

I sold one in VERY good condition, with box, papers, tools, clips, etc., not long ago for $700.00. Buyer was giggling like a bandit as he handed over the money.

Here in Northern Virginia I'd expect to see a 25-2 going for between $750 and $1,000 at a gunshow.

Two years ago I bought a 25-5 4" in .45 Long Colt via Gun Broker. I paid, when all was said and done, north of $800 for it and I consider that to have been a bargain considering that:

1. 4" .45 Long Colts are pretty scarce

2. The last one I saw in Northern Virginia had been years before and was close to that price then.

3. 6" models, which are a lot more common, were pushing $1,000 for one in decent condition.

4. I'd been searching for the 4" .45 Long Colt for over a decade and would NOT be denied. I was prepared to bid up to $1,250 for it because I wanted it so badly.

When I went to pick it up the shop owner said that several of his employees tried to buy it from him outright, thinking it was coming in on a trade or consignment.

The 25-2 is a superb gun. Perhaps the finest large frame ever made by smith. Extremely accurate and very smooth. I only can DREAM of the beautiful 4 inch one I couldn't afford a few years back.
